your choice is endless

I have 4 of those Leupold Vx1 2-7x33 scopes. They work really well on short actions like your 308. I find them to be a good scope for general big game hunting . You can mount them nice and low too, another plus for me.

My Win M70 308 has an older Leupold fixed power 6x33 on it. Works good too, never wanted or needed anything else while hunting with that rifle.

Of your options, I would pick the Leupold scope mounted in QD rings for your .308. I would ensure that the ocular does not extend behind the cocking piece, or at the very worst, does not cross a line, which intersects with the rear bow of the trigger guard. This may require the use of extension rings. Naturally, the length of the stock must accommodate the eye relief of the scope, which decreases with magnification. But neither do I want the LOP so long that the rifle is unwieldy. If you have to go searching for the reticle, once the rifle is shouldered, something needs to be adjusted. Similarly, the height of the rings must accommodate the height of the comb. The rings must be low enough to allow a solid cheek weld to the stock, but not so low as to cause you to mash your cheek into the comb. Very hard contact between you face and the comb makes even mild recoil seem worse than it should be.

Why QD / quick detach rings on a rifle without irons?

I would say yes to the Eropean scopes if they built middle power scopes (1.5-6, or 2-7) that where compact. My favorite scope for a hunting rifle has always been the Leupold 2-7X compact. Due to Leupolds recent change in the warranty of their gold ring optics in Canada however I have been looking for a new scope to call my favorite. I refuse to pay double the American going price for a scope on the hopes that they will cover it 20 years down the road..........in changing the warranty now, there is no guarantee that the warranty will even exist in 20 years. For my most recent 30-06, I just bought a weaver classic 2.5-7X, for half the price of a Leupold, and Weaver classics are excellent optics.
I degress though, that gun deserves a nice small scope, that doesn't look like a sail on top.

A leupold 6 X 42 is all the scope you will ever need for that rifle. Simple, inexpensive, fantastic light transmission, reliable, few moving parts.

Would you dare to listen?

I like this idea. I'm not sure if there really is a need for a variable power scope. Isn't 42mm getting a bit on the big side? or is it ok? hmm..

Wait isn't this one also pretty long?

OK well I've decided just to get a new scope and to keep the VX-I on my backup rifle.

I've pm'd a CGN sponsor to see if he'll cut me a deal on a VX-III x36

i see now why they call you big mouth....if you look hard i have QD scope rings in case i wish to change over to my Bushnell 3200 3x9x40, but i guess there is always some thing that you will be commenting on while sticking your foot in your mouth :rockOn::rockOn:

The 3200 has the same problem and my foot is nowhere near my mouth.
