If Lead goes Dead . what's your choice

Non compliance enough of this BS already.

It isn't even happening.

In the Nova Scotia yearly hunting pamphlet there has been for the last few years a warning on the effects of human consumption of game animals shot with lead bullets.According to the information when an animal is shot with a high powered cartridge lead particles are distributed throughout the body of the animal beyond the wound area.

Absolutely true. When you shoot an animal, lead particulate ends up traveling pretty far from the wound area as shown in the X-ray. I don't see a pamphlet warning about toxins meaning "antis are trying to ban lead ammo because of its effects on humans" but...ymmv.

There are some really good studies out there with lots of deer being examined and x-rayed and the amount of particles and distance of travel being examined.

Read some studies from Europe talking about blood levels and the amount of lead in meat but its a really hard thing to pull off. I mean you can't control for one kind of ammo it was exactly, where it hit the animal, how many times the animal was shot, how the butchering was done, etc. But its a fact that lots of small pieces end up far from where you shot the animal.

This started over protection of the eagle population which is funny in this situation our eagle population has been increasing for years not declining

Did she say the population's existence was threatened by this? Even if it were still rising, I can see why someone would advocate for less use of lead ammo because eagles are getting poisoned and dying. I honestly don't know if our population is rising or falling, have only worked on one bird file so far...but I don't feel like needlessly poisoning any either. Seen enough of em eating gut piles and there are a few dead ones in the office freezer I hope we can get tested someday.

Cool. All of it heavy handed, but all true. The 18" figure is likely from a Minnesota DNR study where they were shooting sheep in the pelvic region, but still. Average max number of fragments and distance traveled from shots with a 308 Win and 150gr Ballistic Tips was 141 and 11" respectively.

That nearly half the bullet weight it loses does have to go somewhere.

Looks like an advisory and an op/ed based on facts, not a push to ban lead.

Thanks for the pic.

Consuming microscopic flecks of lead is hardly “dropping IQ points” territory…

consistent exposure is required

Adults are not overly susceptible to lead poisoning. It takes a large amount of lead ingestion to harm an adult. Infants and children are a different story because they are growing.

Like I stated it was headed that way but the woman behind the drive for the ban passed away so the push died off

Crazy that some of these movements or policy pushes are lead and perpetuated in large part by a very small group of people and sometimes just one person.

In this case it started off as an alarm about the endangerment of eagles ,though here not only is the population in good condition but it has grown. The next tact came later when they started pushing the danger to humans eating wild game.So a lot of talk came about using non lead bullets and people were jumping on the band wagon like chicken little.I figured eventually they wouldn’t t be satisfied with that for long either

Ah, yeah I understand. its tough when someone uses a charismatic species and lots of people don't know much about the issue.

Yep! Exactly.

Meh… It’s ravens that clean up gut piles around here. They are a long lived bird and their population is exploding imo.
I figure as long as they’re selling smoked oysters scraped off the bottom of a Chinese cesspool I’ll shoot what I want with a clear conscience.
My 4 year old enjoyed them as a snack and had elevated heavy metals in his blood.

So because a species is not endangered, that outweighs the concern for the parts of the population that are suffering?

Sorry to hear about your boy.

Just a question for people that say they have enough lead or lead bullet to last there life time, if there is a ban in the use of lead bullets for hunting it doesn’t matter how many bullet or lead you have you still won’t be allowed to use them for hunting, right? Just like now for waterfowl hunting you need to use steel pellets loaded in your shotgun, right?
I mean you can use what ever you want as long as you don’t get caught! Unless I’m missing something and that can be possible hahaha!

Thanks Joel, my boy is fine, all grown up now. Bloodwork was for something else but definitely gave us pause.
I don’t know that there is a problem with lead in my hunting area, it’s pretty empty around here. I’m going with “dilution is the solution” lol.
We still enjoy the odd tin of smoked oysters.

Really happy to hear that.

Oysters etc are really good at hanging onto toxins like cadmium etc but damn, it would help if we weren't importing garbage too...
