In these Ontario woods a model 94 .30-30 is actually the perfect deer rifle. Only when you get out into the farm fields does it start to struggle.

But for a standard rifle for all deer hunting it would be an M70 classic stainless with a fwt barrel in a mcm edge and PTG aluminum bottom metal. Likely 6.5x55. Top it with a VX-3, either 1.75-6 or 2.5-8 depending on the terrain. And some sort of metalworking to make the safety not go "click".
Something similar in an M77 would be nice too.

The choice is totally dependant on what terrain your hunting and how your hunting. Here in Ontario, if your dogging or having deer pushed to you your shots will be under 50 yds at running deer in bush, so you want something fast and multiple shots. My Win 100 in .308 with a 1.5 x 5 Leupold has worked well over the years. The Ruger carbine in 44 mag with an Eotec holographic sight also works well. I am limited now to sitting on a baited stand so any of my Win M-70's, the 30-06 is the usual choice.
 
Making that calibre choice, ;) and taking into consideration, the usual ranges encountered here on the 'wet coast' of the Island, I'd go with the 7x57mm. In addition to the usual ranges encountered, also considering the game animal in question, the 7x57mm would more than fill the needs :).
 
I’ve got a Tikka M695 in 25-06Rem. With a 3-9X40 Leopold It’s gotten to where seems like all I have to do is point approx where the deer is and the deer just tips over.
