If you could only have two hunting rifles...

Just for the hell of it, if you could only have two calibers/hunting rifles what would they be?

I am going for light-medium to heavy game to 400 yards and after buying, trying and selling a hell of a lot of rifles, decided to go with a 7mm Rem Mag and 338 win mag.

What two would you use? :D

I'd go for one rifle, a Blaser R93 or R8 and have multiple barrels for it. Other than that, maybe a couple of nice Cooper or Sako rifles.

I started out with a 270 ... then went through several others.

My basic 2 are currently, a 25-06 and a 35-06 (35 Whelen), but also have a 22LR, a 223 and a 257 Roberts.

I could get along with only the 257 Bob, but would one day like to add a 375 H&H, and possibly a 300 WM.

Like the Remington 700's, Winchester Model 70's and Kimbers. Blued steel & well-marbled ("smoke & honey") French walnut.

Xbolt in .308, and Marlin stainless in 30-30

"heavy game" to 400 yds" the OP said... don't think I'd take either of those two, and certainly NOT some other varmint cartridges mentioned!

For me, heavy game means at least 1000 lbs on up to a ton or more. At 400 yds I'd want a .300 magnum at the bottom end. Then, a .340 WBY, .375 H&H/.375 Ruger, or my 9.3 X 62 than makes about 2500 ft-lbs from the 286 NP at that range. These would be sensible choices. It has well been said by the late Gary Sitton, that if you can't learn to shoot a .375 H&H (at least), there is a certain amount of hunting you will have to forego. And he meant, and I agree, under all conditions, which I assume the OP also meant since he wisely chose 2 magnums, a 7 Rem and the excellent .338... which, by the way, I've had considerable experience with all of those mentioned except for the .375 Ruger.
