That's actually on the menu. My brother has gathered a shotgun and a 22 for him to use (ironically, it's my shotgun). I have a spare 30-06 that he could use, but it's a PITA to move it from NS to AB. That doesn't mean I won't do it, just means I'll have to weigh out whether I want to lend him a rifle and scope. "Neither a borrower nor lender be" has always rung true to me.Any chance you have firearms you can lend him to get him started on a hunt or 2 and time at the range. My personal experience and im sure others here have done the same was to buy budget items and later buy the keeper items that by taking my time were reasonably priced then had sell the original buys they I was never really happy with.
With him getting in the sport it may do him well to take it slow.

Nice list there… that said if I was gonna go all out it would be quite different… hahahaJust to be silly I decided to run the exercise again, but go for the gusto. Same basic parameters...a 30-06, a 22LR, and a 12ga. I stuck to hunting and sporting arms and stayed away from target models and chassis rifles. And someone mentioned rings and bases, which is an area that I overlooked before. Best to budget at least a couple or three hundred to get those.
Rifle - Sako 90 Finnlight - $2670.00
Scope - Leupold VX5HD 3-15x - $1499.98
RF Rifle - CZ 457 American - $869.99
Scope - Leupold VX Freedom RF - $479.98
Shotgun - Browning Citori 825 Field - $4069.99
GST - $479.50
Total - $10,069.44
^^ This ^^ ..... The scope might be had for less if one buys used.Starting from scratch I agree with the 30-06 cartridge selection.
Tikka 30-06 ($1000)
Leupold VX Freedom or Burris Fulfield Scope = Talley lightweights ($500 - $600)
New or used Ruger 10/22 ($450)
Cheapest pump 12 ga ($500)- I miss the days of the $320 remington 870 express

One tweak for a guy starting out, would be swapping the Browning 825 for a Maxus @ $2477... a semi can be a little more practical in some scenarios... and it is a very nice gun, that cuts $1600 off your $10K high end budget... granted, it is not as refined as a nicely balanced O/U, which the "X25" series are... I stopped at "6," but my personal favorites were the "4's."Just to be silly I decided to run the exercise again, but go for the gusto. Same basic parameters...a 30-06, a 22LR, and a 12ga. I had thought about choosing a semi. There are some undeniable benefits to a semi, not the least of which is the recoil mitigation and added third round. I decided to go with an O/U gun mainly for the safety aspect, but also for the panache. Even for an inexperienced shooter I tend to prefer a break action over even a pump for the simplicity, but on the new market there is no beating the price of a pump. That being said, if you've ever watched a noob try to clear a jam on an 870, it can be a real sight to behold. Put a shell in the magazine backwards and watch the wheels come off the wagon. For that reason, you cannot beat a break action. You're definitely not wrong. The used market offers a lot of gun for far less than retail, if you're a savvy shopper. It's the savvy part where things come undone, hence the number of "What to buy as my first..." threads that we see.I'd buy all used starting with a T3x in 30-06 topped with a Burris FFII 3-9 and a Ruger 10-22 with a small low powered scope. Mine has a Bushnell Scopechief VI 1.5-4.5. As for the shotgun, I'd look for a 20ga SxS for bird hunting, something like an SKB M100.
I'm pretty sure one could buy all of this for under $3k and want for nothing.
I prefer an O/U or SXS for upland hunting, but pretty much only use a semi for waterfowl and turkeys these days... if push came to shove and you forced me to choose one, I think it might be the semi... assuming the Fed ####s don't get even stupider than they currently are (not so hard to fathom).I had thought about choosing a semi. I need someone to bring a Super B full of wild turkeys into NS under the cover of darkness. This province needs 'em, in more way than one!P.S - not that you can't do turkey's and waterfowl with an O/U (he says before the purists light his virtual azz on fire...)
