If you had to start from scratch...

I need someone to bring a Super B full of wild turkeys into NS under the cover of darkness. This province needs 'em, in more way than one!
Wouldn't that be nice! I love turkey hunting about as much as moose hunting... and that is saying alot. I booked Namibia so that I wouldn't miss opening morning of turkey's... lol.

Sre you stuck on the 30-06? why not a .308? It has a more manageable recoil for someone getting back into hunting, and is just a better round in my opinion. Sorry, i just have a weird hate for Long actions. I was brought up a .308 guy
I'd get A Ruger in .308 with a vortex scope for a center fire.
A 10/22 for the .22 or even an American in a .17HMR.
And probable a Mossberg 500 in 12 gauge, more uses for hunting, upland and waterfowl.

Fun exercise.

The age old advice of a 12 Ga, .22lr and .30-06 only applies if one wants to be able to hunt everything in Alberta.

If someone has no interest in birds, or shotgun seasons. Well you only really need a center fire rifle.
This.
Or just a shotgun and learn to use slugs.
Also I wouldnt touch a 22lr anymore, shotgun for birds, bunnies and bears. Rifle for long shots, thats it.
I fire more rounds plinking in a year than i have or will hunting in my entire life. If money was tight an sks, if not a 223/308 for fun. If you want to splurge, a 338lm in a hoity toity rifle.

unless he's left handed, my choice is a trip to Intersurplus for a previously loved Parker-Hale, Tikka, Voere, Husqvarna or Sako in .30-06 or 6.5x55...

add a Leupold 3x9

a used 870, 500 or 590

and an adult size .22lr

estimated total $1500

Guns don't wear out if they're not abused, optics however have improved significantly in the last 25 years...

There's no replacement for displacement, you should know that.
If the 06 is better than the 308 based on displacement ......
Then the 300 WSM would be better than the 06.
Then the 300 WM would be better than the 300 WSM.
Than the 300 WBY would be better than the 300 WM.
Than the 30-378 WBY should be the best of the bunch. :)

Savage axis 308
bushnell trophy 3x9x40
Mossberg 500 12 or 20 gauge 18in barrel
Ruger 1022
500 rounds of 150gr for the 308
500 rounds of a mix of buck, slug and steel BB for the shotgun
2000 rounds of 40gr federal blue box for .22

Theres yer' starter pack fella's...don't get much easier then that. The deer, moose, bears and small game will not complain once they are dead.

Yesterday morning I saw a Bull Elk, he walked from 450 yards to 360 yards before going out of sight. Imagine it was September, which of your list would you choose if you were to buy a rifle today in preparation?

If it helps you, the local store has 308, 30-06, and 300WM ammo in stock.

And yeah, I'll consider saying 308 to be disingenuous.

Hey; that sounds about right. I wonder if that also means that a 308 is more gun than a 30-30 or 7.62 X 39 which in turn should kick 30 Carbine butt?

Seems like it should🤣

I get it ..... Use the right gun for the task and location. Here in the east we don't see those distances a lot.

I'm trolling a bit. I like the 30-06 better myself. :)
