This is totally off-topic, but this is one of my pet peeves.
What you suggest is a lovely theory but it is impossible in practice. Guns are weapons. They're defined in law as weapons. The dictionary says they are weapons. People who are not into shooting sports will always see them as weapons because of TV etc. You're banging your head against a brick wall believing otherwise.
When people think of a sword they don't think of modern fencing.
The total failure of trying to pretend handguns are sporting devices was seen in the handgun ban in GB in 1997, public just didn't buy it, and they won't after a massacre. Trying to convince the public that a 9mm Browning is not a "weapon" is a farce.
The better argument is to convince the public that it's okay for people to own weapons, which is why the NRA in the US is so successful.
Wow - that makes so much sense that it's kinda frightening...
