is the 3006 dead?

In a time when people might have a long range gun for sheep, a big caliber for grizzly, a light and handy gun for deer, a brush gun for close up in dense forest and whatever else ..... we forget that in my Dad’s time, they often had one rifle and one shotgun and that was it. The 30-06 is still a great do it all. If you have the budget and a wide variety of hunting situations, by all means, diversify, but if it’s one to do it all, this gun is one of the best.

As to the poster that suggested 303 (it’s a great cartridge), but it’s harder and harder to find ... Canadian tire used to have it, but I haven’t seen it recently, but anywhere they sell ammo you can find 30-06. As an all round cartridge, I’d prefer it to 308 for the times that need a little more oomph. There are a few other great cartridges that are easy to pick up to.

Just as an aside, and know that my hate for the 30-06 is pure... no other cartridge, save maybe the 7.62x39 has offed more two and four legged critters than the 303 Brit. Especially when it comes to Polar Bears and Nazis.

The 30-06 is just like a big name, well advertised Scotch.
It's exactly what you drink, because so and so does, and you really don't know any better.

7.62x54 and 7.62x25 were the Nazi offing cartridges. 7.63x39 was still in diapers when that war ended.

Regular hunting rifles no it's not dead. I would say budget and mid range rifles still regularly chamber it.

Higher end rifles seem to be not chambering .30-06 as much. Seeing a lot of these chamberings in higher end almost custom level rifles 6.5 mm Creedmoor, 7 mm Rem. Mag., 28 Nosler, .308 Win., .300 Win. Mag., .300 WSM, .300 PRC.

Arent 30-06 and .308 virtually identical ballistically? What do you mean "more oomph"? Or are you talking about the potential to hand load a 30-06 a little hotter? In which case, what scenarios are you going to need that? Is the rifle still going to shoot accurately with that extra powder behind the projectile?

There is gains with the .30-06 over the .308, I am sure it has been discussed at length here. Especially if you are reloading, .30-06 with greater powder capacity can handle larger bullets better, 180's, 190's for moose etc., you won't get the same velocities out of the .308 that you can with a .30-06. 100-200 FPS on average. The .300 win mag ups it by another ~200 fps over the .30-06.

There's a thread in the reloading forum where a member was getting 2750 with 200 gr. Noslers. A .308 can't keep pace with that. And as I mentioned in an earlier post, Hodgdon has data for Winchester StaBall that bumps performance up another notch with lighter bullets.

Launching a 165gr Accubond at 2875fps MV from the -06 with 1950 fps and 1400ft/lbs of energy at 500yds, this is very versatile. Load up a 200gr Partition at 2500 fps or a 168gr TSX at 2875, you have a potent stopper right there! Why would the -06 be dead?!

in fact....when deciding which caliber to buy for my first CF...I was mentioning the 6.5 Creedmoor to a friend who has more experience and years than me.....his response was this.
You are at camp...your forgot, lost or soaked your 6.5 ammo...NO ONE has any for ya.... do the same with 3006....chances are someone has a spare box. NOW.....we are in the middle to upper middle aged, so we aren't quite hip to these new fandangled calibers ya'll are talking about lol. Not my only reason for 3006 but true nonetheless.

What's a 30-06........do they even chamber rifles in that cartridge anymore ?

Out with the oldies in with the new, Im not sure what's uglier the 270 win or the 30-06 cartridge.......either way they are so on their way out, the only things worse than those cartridges is a 243 or a .308.

A man with a weatherby username shouldn't comment on ugly cartridges, when he shoots something with a belt and a round shoulder
