Is the .308 dead???

That's like saying "When I go to the grocery store, all they have are bruised and rotten apples!"
When in reality - all the polished delicious apples have already been purchased.

The 308's are likely sold and reaping game ;)

I'm not suggesting the other variations aren't good - I am merely suggesting 308 isn't going anywhere amigo :) I think you may have got that idea by reading all the other similar posts though.

Happy shooting!

My thoughts as well. :D

Case in point, from what I have seen .308's don't sit on the EE for long.

The 308 replaced the 30-06 in the military. I figure only because its lighter. In both weight and recoil. Other then that there is really no other advantage.

JMO

Given that both hunting (and combat) is generally within 100 to 300 yards having the extra 200 to 300 fps out of the 30.06 does seem worth it.

But whatever fills ones freezer is fine by me.

.308 is well and alive! I bought another one early this year, which I now have 3 in that caliber, and was told they are going fast. In fact, it was the last one in the store! Like others have mentioned, .308 sells fast.

IMHO, next to the 30-06, it's the most generic cartridge around.

I would agree .308 and 30-06 are the most popular center fire rifle calibers. But for all cartridges, I would bet on .22LR. And 12ga would give them a good run too.

I'm just sayin - I know it's great and everything (even though I own two 300sav's lol) - it seems like there ain't any on the shelves. Maybe it's just gun shops in BC. I doubt it's because they sell em too fast. I worked at a couple stores and we rarely had a 308 on the shelf, and it wasn't for lack of me #####ing about it haha.

I hear a lot of folks state that the 30/06 and 270 is "better" than the 308 w/o really knowing the difference.

Probably something they heard from good old Dad or some bubba at work, but that perception does prevail.

.

308 is alive and will outlive a helluva lot of other calibres sitting on store shelves. With the introduction of the 308, the 30-06 was "going to die off". We all can see how dead the 06 is today.

Well... I bought my last .308 from a BC shop... just saying! :D Maybe the shops you worked at wanted to promote the more profitable calibers, the "whizzums" and so forth, in terms of ammunition sales?

I think the 7mm-08, WSMs, 338 Federal split the 308s market share. There's too much overlap in rifle cartridges these days IMO. The .308 will never be gone, but it's no longer the default short action target/hunting round it was. I'd say the 243 has the best future of this cartridge family.

In some ways the 06 is better than the 308, once you get up to the heavier grain bullets the 30-06 outshines the 308.

But the 308 is still good calibre.

Walk into a gun shop. Go do it. Come back here and tell me how many 308's are on the shelf. Whizzums, 270's, 7mag's, 3006's. That's IT. The odd 243, 338F and 375. Drives me bananas!! When did the best hunting cartridge ever designed end up getting blacklisted????

Rant off
:sucks:

Cause they get bought up first? I went with it's little brother the 7mm-08...
