......I guess my question is, who was spinning the cylinders as this was a brand-new gun. Would S&W use used-cylinders?....
I for one want to know the answer too. 120 posts and no response from either Ellwood Epps or North Sylva.

Heres a video of the cylinder locked up, Im wiggleing it to show the play that there is. There is some, but no different then any other of the revolvers ive owned. At least that i can remember anyhow.
GunGuy34...does the cylinder wiggle like that with the hammer at full stand? My 4.2" Ruger Redhawk 44mag has no where near that kind of play. I've put ~400rnds for full load factory magnums thru mine and it still locks up tight as day 1.
Zero peeing and only the slightest of drag marks....just saying.
I guess my question is, who was spinning the cylinders as this was a brand-new gun. Would S&W use used-cylinders?
"The slight burring has been caused by someone spinning the cylinder and not stopping it properly. Done continually, this will tear the notches. This cylinder is truly not bad. The factory will not replace the cylinder under warranty as the marks are very slight and will occur during normal wear and tear."
Last update, this will be quick as I am late for work!
I just got off the phone with Murray (Awesome guy!)
About the peening, I explained that it was *Brand New.* Was it possible that it came from S&W in this condition? He was surprised and said very unlikely (not impossible.)
I then explained that it went from S&W, to North Sylva, to EllwoodEpps, then to me.
Again, surprised.
Murray spoke well of all places involved, but suggested that the weak link would most likely be EllwoodEpps. It was suggested that it was possibly a Demo model for customer to handle and abuse.
I explained that I saw a few other revolver with similar markings, online, to which I felt he was still sure it was someone outside of S&W who did it.
I kept spinning my wheels on the matter and then dropped it.
So there you have it, it's possible it came from S&W this way (although very unlikely) but most likely someone at EllwoodEpps (either customer or employee) who didn't know how to properly handle a revolver.
Anyway,
Murray is awesome! (I know I already said that.)
Murray has fixed the bent rod.
Murray also hammered down the peen marks and polished the cylinder and made it look almost new.
Murray has gone over the gun and assured me that it is good working condition and sending it back to me "Free Shipping!"
How's that for service? The guy rocks!
I can safely say this saga is now over for me.
I should now get a presentable product.
To be on the safe side I will never buy from EllwoodEpps again. I will also exercise more discretion when buying online from dealers (I did take this for granted before).
Cheers~

Let's not turn this thread into a Epps bashing thread so fast. Elwood Epps It is a well known dealer with an outstanding reputation. It deserves to be heard.
Well, i dont buy that at all. I got my gun from P&D enterprises. She was in the back pulling out my gun as the shippment had just arrived. So from North Sylva straight to them, then with in a day, straight to me. I cant see those guys taking my gun and doing the hollywood cylinder spin and flick thing over and over again. They were so busy they didnt have time to do that chit. Im not letting Smith off the hook with this one, i blame bad Quality Control on behalf of smith & Wesson. They prob slapped these guns together for us, using old parts or something.
I have never bought from Epps, but I have a hard time throwing them under the bus here. Sure their customer service policy sucks and i wouldnt buy from them due to that, but i dont think they are the ones that caused this. If G37 had the only gun like this, then yes. But he doesnt, mine is similar. I dont see every dealer waiting around for a bunch of revolvers to come in, just so they can play with them and damage them.
Would you agree he may have got a store display model. It seems to me mishandling a revolver by spinning the cylinder would be a trait of the tire kickers more so than somebody working for S&W. Epps certainly should be able to come and present their case. Silence is not always golden.
The wear on this gun is beyond just one spin and boxing the gun for shipment. For Carlton to say the peening is normal wear and not a warranty issue is hard to understand.
Take care
Bob
It looks like we got a bad batch up here with these 629s. I found the same peening on the cylinder as the OP's:

It's also quite dirty from the test firing as well. In itself that's not a big deal to me, although I don't see why they wouldn't clean it up for sale. But mine also came with what looks to be some corrosion on the frame and under the firing pin. Has anyone else seen this on theirs?

I guess I'll be testing the S&W reputation for good customer service...
Im not trying to pick up for Epps here either. I have heard the bad stories about them. I wouldnt buy from them myself.
Im just saying, we seem to be looking for someone to blame, right now the evidence doesnt support Epps being the culprit. As I have shown in videos and photos, my gun was similar and was purchased from P&D enterprises. As well there is another gun posted in here from Garonimus, which had issues too, what looks like rust. Not sure where he bought his gun.
Either way, three guns, three different dealers. All with some issues.
The culprit is Smith & Wesson doing chitty work with chitty Quality control.
