Issues With BC Chief Firearms Officer

It's my first LTATT and Restricted firearm, not that it should make any difference at all to the process.

That does indeed make a huge difference to the process. They're going to get out the scope and inspect your colon for the first few transfers - checking with CFC that you've got an RPAL, that there were no flags on your RPAL App. and backgrounders, that your club membership is confirmed, etc. Some guys do so much restricted stuff that the folks in the office recognize them by name, take one look at the file and approve it, hence the huge difference in transfer/permit times. Generally I've noticed the longer you have an RPAL/ATT the less time you spend waiting for paper.

Fair enough, however belonging to a club that has been around for 93 years, and the fact there is a legislated 28 day period for the PAL approval process, and enhanced screening for the 'Restricted' endorsement suggests to me that there may be a policy within the CFO's office rather than one enacted by legislation. Honestly, it doesn't take much time to do those verifications, and I doubt they verify everyone's claim of a membership to a gun club. In my opinion there are laws that deal with providing false information and that the applicant is a fool to do so at the risk of forfeiting their license.

"Continuous eligibility screening of all firearms licence holders alerts Chief Firearms Officers to public safety risks so appropriate action can be taken. This is done automatically, by computer, every day."

If the BC CFO's office is that busy and overwhelmed, then I am sympathetic to their situation.

I just hope I don't have to wait much longer.

Well the one i applied for last Friday, and received today (Friday which = 1 week wait), was the very first LTATT, that I had ever applied for. Only had my Pal/Rpal for less than 6 months. I think that mine may have gone faster because I was also applying for an 'alternate storage' at the same time, (because my wife doesn't want guns in the house with the kids being as young as they are (6 and 1)) but who knows.

What they're actually doing with the initial reggie and ATT is making sure no one dropped the ball at Miramichi - I know it doesn't make a ton of sense, but the newspapers don't ask why the CFC issued the PAL, they ask how was ### able to get a permit for a handgun/rifle/AK47 (all guns are AK47's to the media) and the crap ends up on the CFO's mat. Given that it's holiday time, that extends the process. Keep the faith, it does get better.

For anyone interested - I just called the CFC about the status of my restricted transfer:
- Transfer started August 9 w/ business
- Already have LTATT and other restricted

He told me for transfers from businesses, last time they received information, they were working on transfers that were initiated on July 27 but this information was received at the beginning of the month. Based on this, he figured mine would be reviewed/approved any day now ....

Hope he is right ...

For anyone trying to guess at their wait ... I just got a call that my transfer was completed today (8 business days) which I think it consistent with what I heard for people that already have a LTATT and other restricted registered.

I called in today, via 18007314000, after being on hold for only about 10 mins, i was transferred to the Alberta CFOs office, they told me they were taking calls for BC because of a huge backlog or something, im on week5 now, granted this is my first restricted so i had to apply for ATT also(5 weeks since i mailed in ATT forms, 7 weeks since purchase)
oh well to busy with work to go to the range anyway..

Please write your MPs, regardless of party. We need to raise the profile of this.

Also, if you search these forums a bit, someone posted a form you can fill out to appeal to the provincial court on the grounds of an unreasonable delay. Apparently that gets things approved pretty quickly.

Judicial review request is being sent in on Monday.

This is fackin BS service when every other province has no backup or anything.

I just bought a springfield xdm and i want it BAD...so I hope the transfer goes fast! Come On BC Chief...Lets Work!!! thx to all who commented it helps me not anticipate to much and be prepared for the wait!

i live in BC.

but your gun was going to Alberta. The transfer times always depend on where the gun was going. I sold to BC, so it sits with the BC CFO, which took 5 Weeks. You sold to a guy in Alberta, so it went to the Alberta CFO, and it took 2 days.:D

true, but i also had a lower transfered to me in the same time frame, coming from sask. So i only meant the BCCFO isnt that slow.

But when did you purchase that lower? The BC CFO only started being slow this year. Most transfers (so I've been told) before that were less than about a week.

Also, the BC CFO has been very inconsistent. Many people are seeing transfers from businesses take less than two weeks. But among private transfers, 6-8 weeks still seems quite common. LTATTs seem to be consistently taking 4-6 weeks (and that is slowly coming down). PALs seem to be the most inconsistent. Most people seem to get new ones issued exactly 28 days after the CFP gets the paperwork, assuming all your ducks are in a row. But for some people it is taking several months.

Two days for a transfer is a huge improvement, but until 95-99% of transfers are that fast, there are serious problems at the BC CFO that need fixing.
