Issues With BC Chief Firearms Officer

Transfer from a site sponsor on my first restricted was completed in 2 weeks. Still waiting on the LTATT. Lady on the phone said the Alberta office is helping them out as they are swamped.

Seems New Brunswick is still helping out the BC office and they say there is no way I can actually call the b.c. cfo's office because all calls automatically get forwarded to NB...I'm thinking about contacting my local MP James Moore and asking some questions, because I also just learned that the B.C. CFO's office is one of five provinces that sent all gun shops letters demanding they keep an unofficial record of all non-restricted firearms they sell since the federal long gun registry was eliminated. http://www.lufa.ca/news/news_item.asp?NewsID=7872
I noticed this when I recently purchased a second SKS and all my information was recorded into a log book. All the same info that would have been recorded into the computer transfer before the long gun registry was eliminated. Whats the point of eliminating it if they are still going to record all the same info except do it behind your back?

That LUFA Letter is dated May 6, 2012. Shortly after LUFA published that Vic Towes sent out a cease and desist letter to all of the CFOs which can be found here:
http://nfa.ca/news/minister-public-safety-vic-toews-letter-cfos

Since that letter didn't do much good it took further arm twisting on Toews' part to get them to stop making it a requirement. As a result the CFOs can no longer demand that retailers keep ledgers on non-restricted firearms sales as a condition of their business licence.

If retailers are still doing it, it is not at the request of the CFOs but as part of the store's inventory records and to cover their own ass.

You'll see that if you register at most of this site's sponsors as a firearms buyer you are required to give them all of your info including date and place of birth.

So.. I've been waiting for my PAL and it's been at the BC CFO for weeks now.. I called and FINALLY got through to somebody and I thought maybe I could get it approved but all she said was they haven't got to it yet and they will get to it when they get to it.. ;(
Did I not say the right words, not get the right employee, or is there nothing I can do once it's in the BC CFO's hands?

Unless your references have been phoned and you've gone through your own interview process, as a first time PAL holder expect to wait. It used to be 28 days, then 45. I'm coming up on my 3rd PAL renewal (before that I had been issued 3 FACs) my last renewal took 43 days.

Some newbies here have been waiting 3 plus months.

4 months and counting on my renewal here and I expire next month.....

Not overly pleased.

It's been pretty freakin weird since C-19 passed. My last 4 restricted transfers (3 purchases, 1 sale) took 7 working days each to complete. These were all done in the last 6 months. During the same time period most of the BC guys posting in this thread and the other one have had nothing but problems. To think, it used to be anywhere from 2 hours to 3 days tops for a restricted transfer.

I'm new to all of this and can't even imagine things being as quick as that! From what I've been reading here our timelines have been pretty good considering how long stuff can take and I'm still a little ticked off that it's taking awhile to get the Registration Certificate through the mail for my CZ, I want to go to the range! Transfer came through last week (January 8th, it was initiated December 13th) seriously, how long does it take to mail a piece of paper from Surrey to the Island?!

I'd suggest you write to the Minister of Public Safety for British Columbia, Hon. Shirley Bond, Room 232, Parliament Buildings, Victoria, V8v 1X4 and to Minister of Public Safety for Canada, Hon. Vic Towes, House of Commons, Ottawa, Ont. Canada K1A 0A6. Unless we complain, the new B.C. CFO will continue to make up her own rules. It'd be nice if she got sick of us western hicks and went back to Ontario.

i have been told in another thread that minister Bond, is actually NOT responsible for the CFO in BC. CAn anyone confirm or deny this?

The BC CFO is federally appointed. BC has chosen not to appoint its own CFO. Therefore, although Bond is not directly responsible for the CFO in BC, she could replace the CFO if she wanted to. (I'm not sure if Bond could unilaterally replace the CFO or if that would require approval from others in the government as well.)

I sold 3 restricted firearms over 6 months ago and they still haven't been transferred. Then I sent a PAL renewal in Sept, they received it Oct 1. Feb 10 and still nothing. Every week I politely inquire as to the status of both and all I hear is "it's in the final stages"

Emails and printed letters have been sent out to Hon. Shirley Bond & Hon Vic Toews voicing my concerns and complaints regarding the BC CFO's conduct as well as her other staff members who for 3 weeks now have ignored my phone calls and voice mails, regardless of the fact their own phone line says voice mail request will be processed the following day.

I said What do I need to do to lend the firearms to the person untill its done.

They went its still in your name blah blah blah I said so I don't care and the transfer was done the next day. I was sick of waiting so I said screw it I will lend it to the guy if it takes to long I don't think they liked that...

Just need to get a short term and they said they recomend writeing a letter saying he can borrow it. I said is that a requirment they went no but it's recomended. They asked if I knew the person I said nope not a clue who he is met him online... I don't even know his address.

I think that motivated them to do it....

Nicely played!

I mailed my RPAL renewal Dec 23 (not the greatest time to mail, but was waiting on 2013 proof of membership from my range) and got the new license Feb 7. Call it 4 weeks to account for general Christmas delays. Not great, but not all that bad either. Now I need to apply for my LTATT, and am unable to download the form online. Using a mac, updated adobe, tried GF's computer, no joy. I guess I'll try calling it in tomorrow, and from the general discussion here I'll be ecstatic if I get it before it expires. :)
