Its here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(Valmet M78)

techincally speaking,

Would it be possible to buy a Valmet and change the stock + barrel/gas system assembly for an AK one, with the proper NR barrel length, and therefore stil have a non-res Valmet with the appearance of a true AK?

I'm sure it would require a fair amount of smith work for the barrel switch, but is it doable?

The receiver is the legal part so yes it's doable. No different than a Galil or M76 conversion. Just a whole lot of money.

This is what I thought. I understand the receiver is the gun, but I thought maybe there was something proprietary about the barrel/gas assembly or something, since I haven't seen anyone turn it into an AK beauty.

wonder if a canadian company could buy the rights to make valmet ak recievers and import us parts or parts kits to complete it

Noone can make new Valmet receivers there have been several threads on this. We can, and do bring in Valmet hunters and AK/Galil parts kits that can be used to make the conversion. I have a hunter to Galil conversion in progress right now.

Could you bring in an M78 in 7.62 with, say, a new stock and a RPK barrel/gas system assembly? If so, do you have an idea of what priced we'd be looking at for the kit?

The M78 is essentially a better quality RPK than the rest so you would be downgrading your rifle just to look like another gun. Im sure by the time you were done a conversion you would at least be in the 3k mark, depending on what you paid for the valmet, the parts kit and labour if you do not do all of the work yourself. Im into my galil for 3k already and I havent even got the gunsmithing work done yet that was just for the rifle and parts.

Well the only reason why i mentionned the RPK barrel assembly is because it seems to be the only AK barrel over 18", so really the only way to go for the "Valmet-to-AK" conversion and keep it non-res if one was to go that route.

Unless you have a source for other 18"+ AK barrel/barrel assemblies?
