It's up to you to arm the Canadian Forces...which sidearm do you supply them with?

Can't believe none of you indicated you'd ask them for what they'd want first? ;)

Agreed.

When the RFP for the General Service Pistol came out, I had a look at the specs. The requirement to hand the TDP to Colt Canada would eliminate most of the serious contenders.

For a general purpose 9mm defensive gun, I think the DAO version of the Grand Power Mk12 would be a good candidate. The solid trigger guard could be enlarged for gloved use. The polymer frame stands up to 4 season use. It's a true ambidextrous gun. A simunition version already exists.

If there was a need for a more aggressive use, the standard trigger system would work fine, and the gun is set up for the accessory lights. A silenced version already exists.
My only concern would be winter testing. With proper lubrication an maintainance, I don't see an issue, but I'd like to see it in a controlled test.

Sure they do, its not rocket surgery.

The navy and MPs have no problems and neither do we, the few that get them here.

Shawn

You would be amazed to see how many people forget to decock when holstering up, also alot of females have problems pulling the 12lbs DA trigger "I see it all the time when am range staff"

The P226 is a fantasic gun hands down and I love it, but may not be the best gun for the once a year user

That's what I thought, In 5.7x28
Could be FNP90, FN57 pistol or new 5.7x28 variant.
Bean counters will be moaning for years.

M&P 9MM because it would be made in the US allowing for offset purchases by US for Canadian made equipment. The M&P will be the next RCMP pistol cuz S&W will want the contract big time, Rose Marie lives in the eyes of the US consumer and S&W has been the RCMP handgun supplier since God made water.

Given the current state of the Federal Budget none of us are likely to be alive before the Cdn military gets a new pistol.

Take Care

i second this ......... ask the people carrying what they would like to use .

if they aren't familar with what is out there make a short list of guns , and have them handle / operate them .

then after a gun is finally chosen , a new government can come in and cancel the order , and then supply everyone with used norinco 1911's that they got cheap at another countries " garage sale "

as will end users who require a gun that functions on anything other than head shots

As for asking the military what they want...unless they have all coincidentally developed some advanced knowledge of pistols through sources unrelated to their employer, I think that would be about as useful as asking runway models what thread and textiles generate the most long-lasting garments.

Most soldiers have barely fired the current issue handguns, let alone possible contenders for a new one. And that's just the question of "have they fired it...ever."

How many know enough about handgun design and supply chain logistics to offer useful opinions about what should be issued? One percent? One tenth of one percent?

No knock on soldiers...but I would ask their opinions on soldiering, not handguns.

Another part of the reason why I would say Sig is because the weapons techs already get trained up on Sigs. I do like Glocks, but just find the lack of safety and light trigger pull would result in too many people having NDs. There are too many idiots out there that know nothing about weapons. For those out there that can't pull the 12lb DA trigger on a Sig, well they are usually the same people that have problems firing a C7/8 as well. . . better to just give them a whistle and a glow stick. Tell them that if they run into trouble to snap the glow stick and blow the whistle until someone comes to save them. The only issues I've seen for Sigs was a broken recoil spring (broken before we even started shooting) and some sort of broken spring in the trigger assembly. That was using course guns that generally had been used and abused through the years, and in excess of 100,000 rounds between 25 or so 226's.

FNP-45 Tactical

15 rounds of 45, Suppresses nicely and is a true modern military pistol built from the ground up. Slap some Trijicon RMR reflex sights on them at issue too.

Only the best.

Now back to reality.

Why do they need pistols anyway, don't they know that pistols are inherently evil and if left unattended will seek out and do harm to innocent babies.

Issue them harsh language

What broke on them exactly?

Trigger return springs mostly, had one guy on tour said he could not pull the trigger, I tested it and it worked for me... he said I am left handed, he tried and it locked up (trigger), I switched to my left had and it jammed 100% of the time. I tagged it and had them send it back for repairs. Strange, but I wish I had more time to look at that one... it had about 1000 rounds through it.

The new style Sig locking block is your problem "SIG has recalled them"

they milled out the right slide to allow for a mag dissconnect to be installed. By doing this allowed the trigger bar to roll into it :( "You see more problems with lefty shooters"
