J-B Bore Paste Substitute

OP, I do not know what is possible for you to do? I made up a holder that goes into a bench vise - then used that to hold the barrel vertical - than used a small nosed funnel and poured several litres of bubbling, boiling water from tea kettle through the bore - actually did that a couple times - it seems the heat from the metal dries the bore completely if it can drip dry. Amazed me how much stuff just plain boiling hot water can make go away. Then I went back to scrubbing with bore brush, coating of oil, etc. before I put that one away.

I also had made up a "bung" from section of automotive heater hose, a plastic plug that is used on opened wine bottles and two gear clamps - clamped that thing on muzzle end - held barrel vertical - filled bore with Ed's Red, Mineral Spirits, Varsol, etc. and let soak for hours, or for over night - seems to loosen different crud in there - depends what the crud is and what solvent got used. Idea was to get gunk loosened or removed right to the muzzle, so I did not want a plug into the bore - which I think would be easier to do. On several, the barrel was unscrewed from the receiver, so I set a "loonie" on top to slow down evaporation from inside that barrel. As per previous posting - this was on old and abused barrels - attempting to restore them to use-ability again - would likely be too much ado for a normal using type rifle.

^ I think we are somewhere between resorting to that and just ignoring it lol

I use patch out not the foaming cleaner. Most of my rifles don’t have this volume of rounds but they also shoot considerably cleaner ammo and it shows

Or go full caveman and wrap some OOOO steel wool on a used bore brush. Soak with a decent gun oil and scrub. Sometimes once you get through the hardened top layer the rest comes easier.

I'll vote for the Rem-40X that Grauhanen mentioned. I have a '51 Tula that gets pretty well carboned after a few range trips of 100+ rounds each using ChiMil corrosive. I put a patch on an old brass brush and soak with 40X, then run that thru a few passes. I add more 40X and keep that up for 10-20 passes. Then a patch with Hoppes #9, and rinse with 90% alcohol. My Teslong shows the barrel shiney, like the Moon with a good telescope. Rifling a bit worn after 70+ years of abuse, still shoots 4-5 MOA @ 100 .

I have just recently started using JB bore paste. It is helpful for sure. I use other cleaning methods most times.
KG 1, KG 12, Wipeout foam, patch out, G96, Barnes CR10, Ballistol, Shooters choice, I’m sure I have missed some lol. I have not found a favorite combo yet, but I typically use foam for 1 hour, brush out, foam overnight, brush and patch out, then use JB and finish with alcohol then G96.

Anyone know of a substitute for JB bore paste available in Canada?

I have a barrel with 1000’s of rounds of steel case non corrosive 7.62 and it has carbon in it that hoppes, brushing and wipeout cannot remove

Asking here because I know that precision guys like the paste. Not interested in the 55 dollar tubs on amazon.

Thanks

Check Dante - they are a CGN sponsor and carry JB.
Thats were I get mine.
Brownells shipping fees for JB is just crazy.

Jb bore paist, a bronze brush, and some hoppes#9 or WD40 to keep things fluid/lubed in barrell while I scrub is the only thing so far that removes the hardened carbon in the barrel for me. I havent used yet but KG2 bore polish is advertised as 1200-1400 grit which is finer than JB bore paist, I am considering the KG2 when my JB runs out.

Flitz metal polish - it's the finest (from a granular perspective) polish available, being only just abrasive enough to even qualify as a polish. It's finer than toothpaste and is safe for rifle bores.

I second Flitz...Been using it for decades...The stuff I have came in a gallon pail has 4000grit and mild non toxic solvents that seem to cut through everything and fast.

I see they now market a specific bore cleaner as well as many other cleaning and polishing products...https://www.flitz.com/gun-bore-cleaner/

Mothers mag wheel polish works well for getting fouling out of barrels, followed with a patching out with Jet Lube 12/34.

This would work well if you are looking for a super fine polishing abrasive. At 3,000 to 10,000 grit, this is much too fine to cause any damage.

What does the housewife use to get carbon out of the pot? Really dirty barrels I have just used hot water, stiff nylon brush and what runs under Cif in our shops. Just a creamy water based gritty cleaner to clean stainless/pots/pans etc. Don't have to over do it and not often.
Flush with soapy hot water followed by clear water. Another advantage is all acids/bases will be removed and the bore rusts less. After blowing out and drying I run some Hoppes No. 9 through.

I havent tried many different products in my lifetime, but the one I have that looks to work pretty good for the hard to get out stuff is Deep Creep from SeaFoam. I picked my can up from Cnd Tire for like 14 bucks a while back.

SOmetimes I let it sit in there for 10-15

I have tried the CLR method that Eric Cortina uses and it works very well. After you are done using the CLR do not forget to swab the barrel out with alcohol, not the kind that you drink.
