OP, I do not know what is possible for you to do? I made up a holder that goes into a bench vise - then used that to hold the barrel vertical - than used a small nosed funnel and poured several litres of bubbling, boiling water from tea kettle through the bore - actually did that a couple times - it seems the heat from the metal dries the bore completely if it can drip dry. Amazed me how much stuff just plain boiling hot water can make go away. Then I went back to scrubbing with bore brush, coating of oil, etc. before I put that one away.
I also had made up a "bung" from section of automotive heater hose, a plastic plug that is used on opened wine bottles and two gear clamps - clamped that thing on muzzle end - held barrel vertical - filled bore with Ed's Red, Mineral Spirits, Varsol, etc. and let soak for hours, or for over night - seems to loosen different crud in there - depends what the crud is and what solvent got used. Idea was to get gunk loosened or removed right to the muzzle, so I did not want a plug into the bore - which I think would be easier to do. On several, the barrel was unscrewed from the receiver, so I set a "loonie" on top to slow down evaporation from inside that barrel. As per previous posting - this was on old and abused barrels - attempting to restore them to use-ability again - would likely be too much ado for a normal using type rifle.
