Jard/Sylvestre J180 Info, Feedback, and Builds

Pretty happy with everything. The gun ran really well with some EWG on the contact points in the receiver and some lube in the carrier. No real complaints about fit/finish. With no optic and an empty cross mag it’s just under 6 pounds.

Which kind of stock adapter did you use to mount the MCX stock onto the receiver? Does simply removing the stock from the adapter let you take out the recoil rods from the back or does the adapter need to come off the receiver as well? I like how it lets you get the MCX stock higher up. Thanks!

It kind of feels like these really are not selling in any numbers (based on how many posts I see about them).

They are of course new to the market, but I would expect based on previous new rifle releases for there to be more posts about them.

Am I wrong?

Sometimes, if you have nothing good to say, then say nothing at all… maybe

Jard has a long history of making garbage. This is not their first rodeo.

They have a lot of ground to make up before people trust them again.

Tbf the use of screws through the side of the receiver to prevent over insertion of magazines (I think) while literally functional didn't exactly inspire....confidence

I want my $750 AR15 back :(

To be honest, I thought it was a really clever solution to an annoying design issue. I smacked a mag into the magwell, and was pleasantly surprised. I can appreciate a simple solution.

Makes me think about NASA’s development of the ball point pen, maybe you don’t need to take a pen into space, when a pencil writes in 0 gravity really well. To each there own, I see your point and I certainly miss my AR’s

Just a note, if you do use lubricant on the J180, you may need to refresh it more often then a piston 180. Please note the following quote from the Direct Impingement Wikipedia page:

Wikipedia said:
A further disadvantage of direct impingement is that combustion gases heat the bolt and bolt carrier as the firearm operates. This heating causes essential lubricant to be "burned off". Lack of proper lubrication is the most common cause of weapon malfunctions. These combined factors reduce service life of these parts, reliability, and mean time between failures.

However, someone else either on CGN or Reddit speculated that the J180 may be a Stoner-like expanding gas system rather then true direct impingement, due to the bolt having piston ring. Looking at a still I pulled of the BCG from the Jard disassembly video, there is two holes which may be vents like those found on an AR-15 BCG (as highlighted by the red arrow I added).

If this is the case, fouling buildup and lubricant drying inside the receiver should be minimal. Can someone who has a J180 check if the hole in the top of the BCG that receives the gas nozzle is blind hole, or sprays out air thorough the holes in the side of the BCG, using compressed air? My thanks to anyone who tries this.

I phoned Sylvestre, and they have another twenty .556/Blackout build kits on the way. They've also ordered charging slot dust covers for those who want to purchase them for the J180 to cover the "pop-tart" slot. It functions similar to the one on the BRN-180 (prohibited AR-15 true unobtanium up here).

Following the build kit order will be a full pre-build rifle order. Following the full rifles, they are definitely bringing in some large bolt face builder kits for 7.62x39mm and others.

Small update: I had mine out for the second time over the weekend. I took it out in a monsoon, and beat the piss out of it. ran a few different types of production ammo, mostly PMC bronze, PMC Xtac, Winchester white box and Frontier. No issues with Cross Mags or MFT pistol mags, I ran about 10 of each through the gun

Ejection was strong and consistent. No function issues, I’m running one of the TNA pencil profile barrels with the carbine length gas system. (Designed for the WK180/WS-MCR) I also use an adjustable gas block, which is a little more then half open. I ran a lot of ammo through it quickly, getting the gun good and hot. I really enjoy the balance and weight of my build and I find the recoil impulse to be much more pleasant then my WK180. Currently this is the only gun in my safe that feels and handles like the AR’s I have on house arrest.

I had a friend try it out as well and he seemed pretty impressed with the overall handling and reliable function of the rifle. I will be buying another builders kit in the near future as this rifle has far exceeded my initially skeptical expectations.

Thanks for the extended feeback!

A note that member Crover over on the Jard forum has confirmed the J1180 uses the proven Stoner pseudo-piston system, not true direct impingement. This is actually good news, as it means after impinging 180 recoil recovery system and rotating the bolt in the BCG, the gases and whatever detritus they carry are being redirected out through too vent holes in the side of the BCG, not into the receiver itself. There should be no more detritus in the action then in an AR-15. Wind of Pain, it would be great if you can confirm this, since you have quote "beat the piss out of it" :)

Over on Reddit r/CanadaGuns, Reddit member DJ_Necrophilia posted the following C7 Reproduction Build using the J180 Builders Kit , https://www.reddit.com/r/canadaguns/comments/s2bl2v/how_it_started_vs_how_its_going/ :

Build details:

-20" government profile barrel

-A2 front sight block and flash hider

-M4 style adjustable stock

-Elcan C79 optic

-stock Jard trigger

Range report:

Fired about 150 rounds of American eagle 55gr fmj and the first 3 or 4 mags had stoppages, but it cleared up quickly and ran more or less flawlessly after that.

I lubed lightly, dry cycled/fired and wiped off excess.

It's a bit chilly today so lube might have a detrimental effect on reliability

I didn't test for accuracy, that'll be a later trip. Obviously I'll have to switch the optic for that since the Elcan isn't the most precise optic out there.

Surprisingly, the stock trigger is pretty good. At least, better than milspec anyway, so I kept it.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the rifle and once wolverine has another 2 gun match I'm probably going to head over and see how it handles that.

Glad to see more of these are out in the wild, there must now be DOZENS.

If the first shipment was the same twenty build kits as the second shipment was, then we may be approaching just over three dozen in the wild; of course not everyone is going to post their build :p .
