Jus' Wondering... Deploying to A'stan... What optic would you choose for C7A1 / C8

ert, ditto onto the welcome -- sorry for the rude intro  -- I was upset at something here and took it out on my keyboard.

Outside CANSOF the only EOTECH's that where bought, got bought by a very crafty R22eR Major working at DLR -- who ordered the C8 and C8FTHB (as the SFW w/o RAS is now called) with the EOTECH afixed as part of an IOR buy.
I beleive that method was caught and vendors for other sights complained that there was not a trial -- so the troops are suffering because someone was greedy and saw a way to make money...

I still believe a TA31 series ACOG is the 80% solution for a C7/C8 optic with the TA31DOC being perhaps 90% and the S&B SHort Dot being the 95% solutions

I'd bet a small amount of money that there is an elcan in Kevin's closet someplace... maybe used a door stop or something but I bet it is there ;)

Kevin in ref to your post - what about an eo/aimpoint 3x combo? This is the set up I am leaning towards.

S&B is still a possibility if the coin can be scratched up, but the TA31DOC I am not a fan of. I found the doc sight to sit much to high for my liking. I think that the combo with the magnifier is a viable option.

Any thoughts or opinions from those with more experience would be greatly appreciated.

Nope -- I will get one of the "next" gen SpectreDR's - just for a range/friend gun -- I have too many AR's now to put Short Dots on anymore -- after 3 I figured it was overkill...

Eotech is great but expensive. I used an old buris for my personal carry in Yugo, i kicked the crap out of it dropped it from pretty high up and it kept goin. just bring extra batteries cuz sometimes your in a hurry and cover and forget to turn it off
Good luck in Astan and give em hell brother

Flattop

When we first got the uppers they came in plastic wrap and the CQ had no idea what to call them - later we found out it was the C8FTHB -- and complete guns came marked as such.

Armament, thanks for the pic.

Anyone have much experience with the TR 21? It looks promising to me as a cqb to midrange capable sight...on paper anyway.

ert- welcome. Don't worry about anything, our bark is worse than our bite, esp Kevin's ;)

It is great to learn about what really works and what is just fluff.

However, I can't help but get pissed that good men and women who wear the uniform and in harms way have to debate what gear THEY CAN AFFORD to put on their service arm so that they can not only do their job more effectively, but come home in one piece.

Why don't we just take one month from the operating budget of the retarded gun registry and buy every soldier a S&B whatever, keep them effective, safe and happy.

Sorry for the rant but it is just an opinion of a tax paying civy who is tired of millions being wasted on political feel goods while we spend pennies doing real work.

Stay safe, come home. We got lots of rocks to pound at 1km.

I agree, particularily as one of the troops budgeting for the site. Although if you feel so strongly about the issue I would be more than happy to accept a S&B Short Dot from you ;)

amen brother

I've only tried the elcan but it was in Somalia. Since we worked on much longer range in the desert. I loved it. I've read many concerns about them in other threads but I played darn hard with mine over 10 years and never broke it. I really cant figured how so many range users came to the conclusion that the mount was to fragile. . . For closer range such as urban warfare, i'd sure go for a red dot but iron sight are nothing more than a back up.

I was also looking at the lower powered leupold mrt scopes as well, and of course the short dot as well. I am looking to scope my norinco m14, both scopes exceed the cost of the rifle, but it would be nice to have a dependable top preforming short to mid range scope for use on several rifles. Basically buy it once and thats it. I already have a leupold mk4 on my remington police, and wow it is a sweet scope. both scopes exceed my soldier's paycheque though so i have to be really sure first.

you must have grabbed a Elcan off a C9 since we all still had Iron Sight C7's......the Elcans didn't last long on the C9's either when we were there too

If I could choose, I'd say an ACOG, though I'd research a bit more before buying. And yes, as far as I know, I am deploying in the near future.

I used Iron sights and a Eotech holo sight... Worked really well. Having said that, I would mount an ACOG if I had the chance.
