Just somethin I been working on ~ Yes, I am still alive!!

:)

blued up a couple barrels and a butt plate last night, threw in a couple of my machinist squares for good measure ;) (they kept rusting)

That PJs stuff has given me consistently great results!

The Miroku is COMPLETE! :)
Drop and pull - everything came out near perfect, it also has a 1/4" cast to it - the LOP is too long for mel, but it points REAL nice.

I gotta say, I'm really impressed with the quality of the gun, Miroku did not cheap out on the parts. (well, the trigger/sear springs are a little suspect but perfectly serviceable.)

complete-001.jpg

Blued the barrels & polished the receiver & trigger guard

complete-002.jpg

This model ~was~ originally a pistol grip - converted to an straight English style. There was no stock to begin with, I basically started with action & barrels.

complete-005.jpg

complete-004.jpg

Pretty nice piece of walnut too

complete-009.jpg

complete-003.jpg

A little ebony accent around the escutcheon (though there is a bit of a gap :( not perfect.... )

complete-006.jpg

Flame blued top lever

complete-007.jpg

The banner on the left side was pretty pitted through, I got rid of it entirely so it looks intentional & the owner can engrave whatever he likes there ~ if he so chooses :)

complete-008.jpg

and flame blued all the screws.

Finally get to focus on finishing one of MY guns! The Jaeger :)
Rice .68cal Swamped Octagon Barrel, Siler lock - gonna be sweet....

jaeger09.jpg

Had to make a "D" bit from some AO drill rod to ream out the ram rod hole a little larger than the rod itself...

jaeger07.jpg

Nice and hard - pretty easy in fact :)

jaeger08.jpg

jaeger06.jpg

Perfect fit, just snug enough to not fall out

jaeger05.jpg

If you think this looks like a ##### of an inlet - you would be only half right.

jaeger04.jpg

In the end it wasn't really all that bad

jaeger03.jpg

All the inletting is done, everything is pinned... it's actually shootable right now.
Just need to cut a patchbox & shape it...

Well,..... and make a nose cap, and finishing & make a patchbox release mechanism, oh and escutcheons will need inletting, and bluing the trigger, tuning the lock, filing and polishing a ton of brass....sling swivel & stud, a sling ...

Hum, maybe there is still a ways to go yet :(

Some updated progress on the JAeger ... coming right along, still a ways to go... hopefully will be done in the next week or two!

Some early progress.
jager-10-14-18-001.jpg

The list I made for the finishing bits... still working on that.
jager-10-14-18-004.jpg

Making my own nose cap.
jager-10-14-18-003.jpg

In hindsight, I probably would have been better off buying one, it was a lot of work and not a great deal of fun. (brass is expensive!!)
jager-10-14-18-007.jpg

But it turned out pretty good in the end.
jager-10-14-18-006.jpg

An R.E Davis double set trigger. Can't tell you how much I am impressed with the quality. This showed up as a rough casting, it has been filed, polished and flame blued at this point.
jager-10-14-18-005.jpg

An early test fit, temporary pins holding in the trigger guard.
jager-10-14-18-008.jpg

The lock is also an R.E. Davis lock, it also shows up as a rough casting that needs to be filed & polished, but it was already set up and tuned. This also got flame blued.
jager-10-14-18-010.jpg

Same lock.
jager-10-14-18-011.jpg

Just knocking things off the list - LOTS of filing and polishing over the past few days...
jager-10-15-18-004.jpg

My plan was to make a sliding wooden patch box, but that got turfed with a stupid router bit backing out on me ... so the plan changed to a hinged box with steel plates.

Not super thrilled with that plate design but the test strip of steel looks good, hard to get an even color on such a thin piece of metal (1/16")
jager-10-15-18-005.jpg

Working on something a little more 'Germanic' for the sides.
jager-10-15-18-002.jpg

Agonizing in fact ....
jager-10-15-18-001.jpg

better ....
jager-10-15-18-008.jpg

Final - I like it!!
jager-10-15-18-007.jpg

Now just shwack it up in Illustrator, print some test fits and see if I can somehow transfer that to a plate of steel.... some other night.

I love it! Thanks for continuing to share! I can definately relate to having seemingly unending "to do lists"... But in the end, its ohh soo worth it!

no problem :)

Might be a week or more till I get back to that .... I called a place about laser cutting the box from 3/32" stainless ... the cost was remarkably low - so going to design a couple more patch boxes and some escutcheons and have them cut them - will save me untold hours of filing! :)

you may want to look into waterjet cutting to ive had small parts done both ways and water jet is the nicest

I've looked into waterjet a couple of times for different things, but the cost was WAY up there.

they were telling me $300 just to get set up (this laser guy is at about $100/machine hour) should I have been looking harder or is that the going price? (because I still have parts 1.5" & 2" thick that need cutting)

Give true edge metal works in Calgary a call, I've had them cut a few things, they are cheap. Just had four 19.5" diameter 1/4" steel beadlock rings cut. Material and cutting was under $300 for the 4 of them. I've had a few different places cut with laser or waterjet actually, also aerotech in calgary, and triton waterjet out of the us. You can always email them the file for a quote.

This is has been a great thread with lots of eye candy. I'm gonna sidetrack a bit, I was looking at ordering milled aluminum for doing takedown conversion on lever 94's. I got some pretty good prices from alibaba to have components made. If you think you may want to do more lever's in the future and would like to do that conversion, you should check online at a few sites where people do the conversion, and if your interested let me know and I'll order multiples. Cheaper by the dozen.

Never considered doing a conversion, but sounds interesting - will take a peek at what is going on :)

I'm pretty lucky for sourcing stuff like that, Metals Plus is a 5 minute drive from me and the place doing the cutting is across the street from them !! :) http://cutandengrave.com/ I got a quote for just the patchbox at $100 ... because that is the minimum charge, so I upped the order and added some custom escutcheons and a second patchbox :)

I say I am lucky as Oshawa has a GMC plant in town and there are literally dozens of specialized and general machine shops, die makers, cutters and engravers in the area.

there will certainly be pics when this stuff comes back. also - I'm not super concerned about the finish or tolerances even as the parts still need to be fitted, filed, polished and the hinge knuckles bent then blued... and you will not see most of the edges anyway so water jet cutting isn't really necessary.... :)

Yeah, if you find yourself more than interested let me know.

I can't find the pricing off hand but I think it was about $20 for the magazine plug with the pop up pin, and around $15 for the takedown metal. I was thinking it would be a fun, though not necessarily gainful endeavour to find old 94's, mod them for takedown, put some new lumber on them, maybe add a saddle ring and sell them on the side for fun.

well the laser cut parts showed up ... not thrilled, I mean the parts look great lots of cleanup and they are too thick .. way too thick to be useful.

I think I will have to bin these - good news is I found a waterjet guy even closer with a $60 minimum run... so will be trying that now.

SKILLS BUILDING!!! :)

Working away on some fun stuff ... took some time out for some skill building, instead of practising on scraps I decided to make a bunch of grips for my super B - I figure if I am actually working on a project I'm less likely to half ass something ;)

Ran out of steam around midnight ... has it's issues but I think is a pretty good crack at a first wire inlay attempt ...
