yup - dad has one with that conversion but whoever did it used a metal piece instead of teflon and it will slop from side to side and hang up the bolt.
I think the teflon is supposed to be a tight press fit so it doesn't move.
Though I do like the idea of a fixed pin, I also really like the idea of a small striker that can be easily replaced....
The Jager is done ... and shot - a whole bunch of times .. fast lock there is video on my facebook page, you will have to like that ~ https://www.facebook.com/kimballarms
So I started on a kit gun someone gave me as a gratuity (you know who you are - your 1870 is finally out of the soak and the barrel finally came off!!) - wanted to see just how long it takes to make one of these things - the plan was to try to get it done in about a work week without rushing anything.... about 40 - 50 hours ...
So when I say "kit gun" I mean there is a lock, barrel, trigger guard here that are still usable really only missing one ram rod pipe, but I didn't like:
- the sideplate, it looks ###, complete new plan for that.
- the toe plate ... meh. will make something better.
- the trigger, blah... replacing with double set
- the butt plate, someone drilled the hole off center. but I have a plan on turning that into a feature!
- the stock was supposed to be AAA+ curly maple.... it's not. it has some curl in it, if you look real hard but blah. I'll use it as a pattern. (then firewood)
So all that needs fixin.
So the kit is from the now defunct "Clarke Industries" - let's take a peek...
The kit blank on the new blank ... it's gonna be a LOOOONG gun
Some of the brass hardware - we are keeping the patchbox, it's nice - replacing the rest.
Single trigger - meh, replacing with a double set ...
I thought the lock was real nice on first inspection, it *IS* pretty, but has some real issues that will take a bunch of work to remedy
I somehow managed to get the barrel inlet in about 2 hours!!!!!! like "wow" and it's perfect and tight ... super happy about that.
Not only that but it came with the lugs installed and pre-drilled, so I had to drill the holes in the stock for that exactly. Tough job but also 'nailed that'
The lock inlet went almost as fast, I had basically a functioning gun in about 15 hours! Problem here is that I was about 2mm off (forward) on the lock position leaving the touch hole a bit forward of the pan center. It's not in a terrible positionand fortunately an easy fix to reposition the touch hole (make a new liner with off center hole )
The problem was the rear lock bolt that passes through the tang, that hole was also pre-drilled, going to have to drill that out, tap it, fill it and re-drill.
So just some minor bits, inletting the trigger & guard, the butt plate was inlet as well, started rough shaping the stock. That all brought me to about 20 hours .... well on track for finishing in about 40 - right??
Well, I had NO PLANS WHATSOEVER as to what happened next... OCD? boredom? Demonic possession? self hate? I have no idea why I did this:
I'm seeing that 40 hour target goal rapidly vanishing into the sunset ... Green is wood, red is wire ....
So here I am sitting at 3:30 in the AM 30 hours in.... will start the wire tomorrow maybe. ... maybe shape the lock area... I dunno.
oh, and to top it all off, I decided to finish the project without using sandpaper .... all chisels and scrapers ...
