Just somethin I been working on ~ Yes, I am still alive!!

Did a Vetterli rimfire -> centre fire conversion for dear old dad a few nights ago ...

conversion-004.jpg

Someone had already drilled a new hole inthe bolt face a little (HAHAH!) oversize. And off center, and not round... OK - completely botched!

conversion-003.jpg

Needed to rebore it and make a plug (O1 tool steel, harder than the original bolt)

conversion-005.jpg

trimmed off the original pin (which was broken anyway) and turned it into a sleeve basically.

conversion-002.jpg

new pin is also O1 tool steel, all ready for assembly here, will just pin it together.

conversion-004.jpg

pretty sweet eh? :)

And the best part?? A high school buddy dropped by and left this for me :)

the BIG version that you can actually read. cost me a 6 pack and a box of scrap wood, thanks Joe!! :)

Quick update on the Jaeger... finally got the last pieces fitted and in ... it's just finishing now!

happening-006.jpg

stripped down & ready for dye

RED!

It always dries a little funny, but will turn a deep red when oiled.. which will happen tonight - if all goes well I shoot stuff next Sunday!

Nice conversion/repair. They are too nice to remain wall hanger. Working the bolt sound like closing the hatch on a tank.

Thanks .... never shot one, dad has like 6 or 7 of them, I have a strange feeling this won't be my last conversion ;)

Was not too bad though, only about 3 hours machine time.

Though I might have to come up with something different for the ones without damaged strikers.

The Jager is done ... and shot - a whole bunch of times .. fast lock :) there is video on my facebook page, you will have to like that ~ https://www.facebook.com/kimballarms

So I started on a kit gun someone gave me as a gratuity (you know who you are - your 1870 is finally out of the soak and the barrel finally came off!!) - wanted to see just how long it takes to make one of these things - the plan was to try to get it done in about a work week without rushing anything.... about 40 - 50 hours ...

So when I say "kit gun" I mean there is a lock, barrel, trigger guard here that are still usable really only missing one ram rod pipe, but I didn't like:
- the sideplate, it looks ###, complete new plan for that.
- the toe plate ... meh. will make something better.
- the trigger, blah... replacing with double set
- the butt plate, someone drilled the hole off center. but I have a plan on turning that into a feature! ;)
- the stock was supposed to be AAA+ curly maple.... it's not. it has some curl in it, if you look real hard but blah. I'll use it as a pattern. (then firewood)
So all that needs fixin.

So the kit is from the now defunct "Clarke Industries" - let's take a peek...

The kit blank on the new blank ... it's gonna be a LOOOONG gun :)

Some of the brass hardware - we are keeping the patchbox, it's nice - replacing the rest.

Single trigger - meh, replacing with a double set ...

I thought the lock was real nice on first inspection, it *IS* pretty, but has some real issues that will take a bunch of work to remedy :(
number23-010.jpg

I somehow managed to get the barrel inlet in about 2 hours!!!!!! like "wow" and it's perfect and tight ... super happy about that.
Not only that but it came with the lugs installed and pre-drilled, so I had to drill the holes in the stock for that exactly. Tough job but also 'nailed that'
number23-006.jpg

The lock inlet went almost as fast, I had basically a functioning gun in about 15 hours! Problem here is that I was about 2mm off (forward) on the lock position leaving the touch hole a bit forward of the pan center. It's not in a terrible positionand fortunately an easy fix to reposition the touch hole (make a new liner with off center hole ;) )
The problem was the rear lock bolt that passes through the tang, that hole was also pre-drilled, going to have to drill that out, tap it, fill it and re-drill.

So just some minor bits, inletting the trigger & guard, the butt plate was inlet as well, started rough shaping the stock. That all brought me to about 20 hours .... well on track for finishing in about 40 - right??

Well, I had NO PLANS WHATSOEVER as to what happened next... OCD? boredom? Demonic possession? self hate? I have no idea why I did this:

I'm seeing that 40 hour target goal rapidly vanishing into the sunset ... Green is wood, red is wire ....

So here I am sitting at 3:30 in the AM 30 hours in.... will start the wire tomorrow maybe. ... maybe shape the lock area... I dunno.

oh, and to top it all off, I decided to finish the project without using sandpaper .... all chisels and scrapers ...

(kill me now)

Been a while since I posted anything .... sooooooo just finished this up tonight.

Made some stainless spacers for the butt plate and grip cap to sort of even out the stainless look .... nice gun, I want one :)
