Kar98 Iron Sights are awful.

I can understand returning fire at night... this isn't Sniper Zen; pointing in the right direction and shooting.
But to say that the WW2 soldiers had no 'need' for sights makes you sound a bit silly. Especially with bolt actions...kinda hard to 'walk the fire' to the target.
Did you learn that from Video games?

Why is it silly?
Get your favorite rifle, set up target at 100 yards or what ever distance you are comfortable with and fire at it. shoot at it, until you have no need to look through the sights, but insuring the hits are made. Practice more until you achieve 95% hit probability. Then variate distance to target, practice more. Shoulder the rifle, dry fire it. Get used to it. Practice more, fire some more. Then when you come to the range and set up target and shoot first shot without aiming through the sights and hit your target, then Voila Tokguy you made it.

What is CGN has to do with it?
Quite frankly I don't care where you been to. If you wish I can tell you where to go though.

This thread is about awful regular K98 sights. Please read the first post.
There were no night sights in WW2 in wide spread use on regular k98, issued to regular soldier. Besides it has nothing to do with what i'm saying.

What I'm saying that once you handle your rifle enough times to know where it hits with standard issued ammo all you have to do is shoulder it and squeeze the trigger.
This is done without aiming, by muscle memory. It only comes with practice and drilling. And it makes no difference its night or day, rain or snow. Night sights or no night sights. Light or no light.
As long as target is visible and within acceptable range.

That's why they try to make service ammo to same speck as consistent as possible, so it would shoot in the same trajectory. HM I wonder why is that.
Yes sights are good to have on the rifle but they are not used in majority of engagements.

OK big guy, tell me where to go! DO IT! Reading comprehension is clearly not a strong suite for you.

YOU said: "There was no night sights in those days(sic)"
Your words were absolute. I pointed out that this was false, shift the goalposts all you like.

YOU said: "You aim at the light at night in the dark, can you see your sights? I doubt it"
I pointed out that this was wrong which you now seem to agree with see "Yes if you have lots of light at the target you can see the silhouette [through your sights]."

You have in multiple posts refereed to other members as "armchair soldiers" implying a lack of personal experience. Apparently we are blessed with the presence of a real psychic whose power is fueled by swinging his stick around online.

I guess you're right in the last bit though... they try to make service ammo consistent so that you can shoot at night without seeing your sights Laugh2 Is this just deep trolling I'm not understanding?Sunray? Is that you?

I thought I told you to go read first post. Did you?
What is it about?
Looks like you have issue with English language, not me.
Besides I can't be Sunray, as he never replied to his own posts.

This is comedy gold.

Damn man no wonder armies no longer issue optics or backup sights hell I haven't seen a pistol with sights since the Great War era!

You're wrong on so many level but it's making for a good read so keep it up man I love it, I need more of this great "couch sniper" wisdom. Imagine an army not trained to fire on confirmed targets, just fire at bumps in the night with their Jedi skills.

Learn to shoot instinctively, you don't need sights for that.
WW2 soldiers had no time to use their sights, its point and shoot or duck for cover. So its not really matter what shape your sights are, once you learn where your rifle hits and its only weapon you eat and sleep with, that's all that matter.

This is one of the most ridiculous statements I've ever heard on CGN. To say a conscripted soldier with limited training before being sent the front could automatically acquire targets and take them out without using sights is preposterous. Sleeping and eating with a rifle doesn't make you proficient with it, and soldiers in WW2 had far less training and rounds down range than soldiers today.

I'm glad you like it sir. However as others you probably didn't read the first post of this thread. Which states how bad k98 sights are. My suggestion was to learn to shoot by instinct. without using the sights.
Take it as you wish, but if you look at any video of modern combat all what soldiers are doing are mag dumps in perceived enemy direction, to keep enemy suppressed and pinned down.
Then look at some US cops videos where they do mag dumps with their glocks behind the cars or through windshields when chasing suspects.

Let me ask you a question, are they using their sights?

I'm not saying they don't aim, its instinctive shooting.
Armies change and they do fight differently now than in WW2. And OP can practice and hone this skill as well with his k98.

You are correct sir, eating and sleeping with rifle won't make you proficient with it ,practice and only practice will.

I've had two Spanish K98 rifles (La Coruna) and though I never shot them, when I shouldered the rifle to see the sights I always found the wooden handguard groove too shallow, obstructing the rear sight.

It's not just you. I have incredible love of the military mauser rifles and actions.
I fully agree the V notch sights are ungodly terrible. I've always been able to shoot them accurately enough but they are terrible. Way too tight and way too narrow. I had to shoot my IDF mauser a lot to get even average competent with them.

It’s also basically the sight picture which won it, as the soviets did most the work to win the war. And even then many of the other allies used it, France, UK, Australia, India, even some of the US...

Overall I prefer the Inverted Triangle sights myself, I tend to favour the Swiss style of it though.

Was being sarcastic.

Overall if your proficient with the’ they get the job done. My first center fire rifle was a Yugo K98 and when it’s the only option I had so I got used to them. Sure, there are “better” sights... these work to.

Just close your eyes and become one with the rifle...it'll all work out. Kinda like JT and the budget...it'll all work out, lol.
No sights Sir! Don't need them Sir!
Jesus wept...
