Kar98 Iron Sights are awful.

I'm glad you like it sir. However as others you probably didn't read the first post of this thread. Which states how bad k98 sights are. My suggestion was to learn to shoot by instinct. without using the sights.
Take it as you wish, but if you look at any video of modern combat all what soldiers are doing are mag dumps in perceived enemy direction, to keep enemy suppressed and pinned down.
Then look at some US cops videos where they do mag dumps with their glocks behind the cars or through windshields when chasing suspects.

Let me ask you a question, are they using their sights?

I'm not saying they don't aim, its instinctive shooting.
Armies change and they do fight differently now than in WW2. And OP can practice and hone this skill as well with his k98.

You should work in acquisition for our army, all those Elcan optics we spent money on...just not necessary in the majority of engagements!

Also this "perceived enemy direction" thing you have to get away from this. Every serviceman is taught to appropriately confirm what is their target, what's beyond their target etc unless it's some poorly disciplined conscript mess of an army or some rebels (perhaps you should lay off the videos of ISIS fighters randomly firing belt fed machine guns into the ether...).

"Instinctual" shooting works within 7 meters or less, which is the most common self defense shooting distance. If you've trained to use the sights of a weapon enough, you will indeed naturally bring the sights up and naturally have the proper sight picture to fire the weapon with some degree of accuracy, however this would require a high degree of proficiency with the sights of the weapon.

There are no jedi tricks here. There is blind firing (what you are suggesting) or there is accurate, deliberate fire.

I guarantee you soldiers (I know this from experience) and police are trained to utilize every tool they have to protect themselves.

Also I'm not trying to be insulting I think maybe you just don't actually know and that is okay.

tl;dr K98 sights do kind of suck

May I suggest using the front hood for the front post? I found that helped me a lot and I've shot my Mausers in competition before.

I appreciate your insight and your instinctual shooting comment is almost what i'm talking about since the beginning. You have to be proficient with the weapon and practice to the fullest, drills that will help with sight alignment. To the degree where you would even train your eyesight to focus on the part of your rifle that help to do the alignment of the held rifle. to make the shot.
with Handgun yes 10 yards or less is easy to do, but one can practice to hit targets at various distances with the rifle.

Without practice and experience of how the weapon shoots its difficult to do. So there is no sorcery or magic, its hard work and dedication in order to be good at it.

Quotation is the greatest form of flattery.

Well, we must just the best-est of friends then. I think I'll be fine without the Jedi lessons though...thanks. Somehow my ammo supply would likely run out before I mind melded with the rifle.
I like shooting offhand; and aimed, that's what I do. No bench ( unless sighting in initially ), 'Three gun' or even 'Two'...not even any 'Snap Shooting'. This will indubitably cost me dearly in any engagement... though that likelihood is slim.
I'm a believer in the 'Slow is Smooth, smooth is fast' mantra.
Not shotgun logic...sorry.

I'm not against friendship, I'll send you request.
Ammo is always a factor, but when army is paying for it, who cares.
In our world we pay for ammo and practice once a week or at best on weekend at the range. Its not our occupation and life does not depend on this skill.
But when its own life at stake and its kill or be killed, its totally different story.
Happy new year.

may be the wrong spot to post this however have shot my one 7.92 mauser with the poor V sights, and have another (a swedish 96' may be a bit different) with soderin diopter sights. i find them far superior.

now to pose my question. did the Germans install diopters on service rifles for combat? or was it a civilian thing to install them?

Civilian. Criminal offence to alter any army's equipment when it is still in service.

That is why Swiss K31 diopters had to be mounted without any drilling and tapping on Army owned rifles. All parts and specs had to be within army regs.
Gradually, more post service add-ons were allowed if the army felt it would increase participation in the national shoots by more senior shooters, especially on privately owned ordnance.
Regulations could change year after year.
Scopes still not allowed.

Imagine spending 6 days attacking a guy online because he made a comment about instinctive shooting. Lol, get a life.

Gewehr holds his own, LOL. He likes the back 'n forth as much as any...we don't take a little BS to heart too long. He sees what he thinks is BS and comments as such...we do the same.
A literary skirmish, little snipes back and forth. It's the ide's of a new year...we need more vitamin D and to inhale gunsmoke.
We aren't attacking, small incursions at best.

Fair enough. Carry on.

I think the closest we can get based on an optics level is utilization of a holographic sight. Think about it: With an Eotech you don't focus on the reticle but the target.

But please, no Eotechs on the Mausers. Think of the gats.

Nop no modern sights, no sights period.
Only muscle memory will do. Point and shoot.
It can be done with AR or SKS, what ever rifle you choose. But it has to be the only one rifle and standard ammo for it. Yes sights can be used and in most drills will be required, cheek weld, weight, sling, mag loaded and etc. Practice every day, only way.

Lol is it been that long? 6 days already. pointing and dry firing poor mauser.

sounds like how my 6.5mm feels to shoot! hits where you want it to. great for plinking!

What I meant was the modern equivalent of the practice of natural or uh, instant?? sight alignment is the holographic weapon sight; kind of brings the two theories together.
