King of 4000fps

Somewhere back in the 90s there was an article on using Sabots in a 458wm that drove 308s to over 4k. Just sayin. Lol
Yes, it was in "Canadian Hunting and Shooting" or something like that. Ruger No. 1, 458 Winchester with 30 cal bullets and sabots IIRC.

I was getting almost 4300 out of my Swift with 40 grain bullets... I admit, I was chasing the speed, but it turned out to be too flighty and inconsistent , so I just gave up on being fastest and settled for most accurate with 55 grain bullets at 3900... its not worth chasing the speed simply for the sake of speed, unless you spend all of your shooting time watch a chronograph screen. I mostly had the crosshairs on fur.

Not so much chasing top speeds but rather just having something capable of 4000+. Currently my fastest is my 2506 and once it's rebarreled I'm hoping to find a heavier load for it for deer sized game and find something to replace the 75gr vmax load I had for it
Plus point and shoot on popcans would be nice for my daughter as she moves into shooting and stepping up from rimfires. Hence I was thinking 17 rem or 204ruger. It could double as a coon and coyote getter to

IMO skip the .17's... been there done that, they are PITA to load. Sounds like .204R be your Boo... you can easily make 4000 with 32 grain pills.

As good as 4K is, it’s just last century’s news, Once you have hit 5K with a 22-284 , there is no looking back. 35 gr monos got me there.

What makes them a pain? Just how bloody small the bullet is?
The cases are just a bit hard to work with is what I found.

Hoyt may have a different opinion.

The 17 FB was quite a bit easier to load and stupid fast.

I did some cool things with downloading the load in 17 Hornet that allowed me to make it quieter and a bit better to clean up vermin around machinery.

I keep a good stock of trailboss and 4759 just for those reasons.

Yeah... I have sausage fingers, the small cases, coupled with tiny bullets were a PITA... even picking up a bullet off the bench was a pain. .20 cal was much better and I shot a couple .20's for a number of years... then just decided that if a .22 cal couldn't do it, it didn't need to be done.

The problem with loading up 22-250 and 243 -6mm s etc to over 4000 fps with light bullets is there extremely hard on the barrels throat and SOON ! Burn it out - barrel life is short with them while the smaller powder capacity cartridges such as the FAST. 204 Ruger are gentle on your barrel - good accuracy could be as much as 4 times longer . Just sometime to consider when you want FAST . JMO RJ
