Ladies and Gentelmen and turkey hunters of all ages!

Hey grnhawg.... nice to hear your still kickin ass and tagging victims! I may have to quit guiding here shortly and start hunting for myself to get my hands on that call. I am still using that Predator call I got from you and it pulls them in like a magnet. When are You and Chilly and me do that varmint hunt we been planning for about three years ...whaddyasay?

Well, tagged out this morning. The birds were really on today, getting into the bush a little late, 5:45am, the birds were gobbling their fool heads off. set myself up in a little clearing, and gave a few soft clucks, just to let them know I was there. The hens were even trying to compete with me this morning. I waited about 15 minutes before doing some soft calling again, and all three Toms gobbled back at me.

The hens were all around me this morning, one about half way between myself and the roosted Toms, about 50 yards away, another was nested 60 to 70 yards behind me, and the boss hen was 100 yards or so to my 10 o'clock. I knew that when the Toms hit the ground, I was going to have to make an impression.

They flew down about 6:10, and I got on the call. I put a string together about 2 or 2 1/2 min. long, all the while the Toms were going into a frenzy. Gobbling on top of one another, and just going wild.Meanwhile, the other hens were trying to attract their attention, especially the one behind me. She was nested just inside the field edge, going back and forth clucking and carrying on. I waited about a min. Then got on the call hard again.

The Toms started moving closer, gobbling away, so I got the gun up on my knee and waited. I spotted the first Jake moving through the scrub, about 50 yards away to my eleven o'clock, and then the bigger one behind. At this time, the hen that was behind me started to get closer, on an intercept course with the Toms.

The Jake and Tom finally moved out of the scrub, about 25 yards to my 12 o'clock, and I got the RedDot on the Toms neck. At this time the hen was about 15 yards behind me at my 7 o'clock, and the Toms saw her and made a move closer. I moved the gun slightly, following the Tom in the scope, and the hen gave out a PUTT, the kiss of death, she must have seen the gun move, being so close. The Tom lifted his head, and I squeezed a shot off. Went down like a sack of potatoes, and the hen ran right in front of me, about 5 yards away, and the Jake flew off into the bush.

All in all, a great quick morning hunt, and I am kinda sad it is over. I will probably get out with some friends, and do some calling for them, so might get to see some more action yet.

Cheers, and here are the pics:

Well, here's #2 for the season. Got him last week. Another jake. (There's more farking jakes walking around then I can shake a stick at.)
Had a hen come out, and then 3 jakes, one right after another about 10 yards in front of me. ALL THE SAME FRIKKEN SIZE!! #3 got it. The other 2 jumped and then stood there not knowing what the hell went wrong. If the laws we're different, I'd have bagged all three right then and there!! (Well, I had my O/U, so 2 of them anyway!)
Ah well, I've done what I can for population control, and am very pleased to put my limit in the freezer this spring.
Time for fishing!!

Finally tagged a bird this morning! A small Jake but hehI pulled out all the stops and it worked. Me and Herman, (my home made tom decoy) pulled in a pair of jakes. I was set up on the south edge of the bush on a fresh sprouted corn field. I had herman pumpin henrietta with the aid of some fishing line while my other decoys were feeding away. This is in a west finger if the field facing a favorite roosting area. Lots of gobbling started about 5:30 right from where I expected. Afew light calls later and a big tom appeared about 100 yards directly across this field followed shortly by the 2 jakes. Not sure if it was me or Herman but the big guy wasn't interested in having anything to do with us. The jakes watched Herman get his mojo goin and had to check it out. The more aggresive one in the lead was struttin the whole 100 yards with his little brother mimicking him as best he could. Their necks were both getting redder with every step. As they angled in closer and closer I knew this was going to get very up close and personal in a hurry. Finally they came to a stop 5 yards directly in front of my muzzle with the aggresive one in full strut behind weeds at the field edge. The smaller one looked up and I let him have it as soon as our eyes met. Big brother did a back flip and then came right back and tried to get his brother up! Lots of close encounters with coyotes, deer and hens this year but persistance and some ruthless tactics finally paid off. Maybe I can have better luck at dragging my son out of bed next Saturday for one last kick at the can. Would have loved to have him with me today. Perfect 20 gauge range.

Well got out one last time but no luck. Decoy spread brought in a big hen that had a long argument with me at 5 yards, but no toms. I was actually hoping that the big beotch fest I had with the hen would bring in some other birds but ran out of legal time.
TOO HOT and buggy! Marlin Jr. and I were almost carried back to the truck by skittas in the morning.
Enough rambling..
Whos the lucky winner of that beautiful call offered up by Grnhawg????

My Season

Well, it was tough but productive season.
After a miss on opening afternoon which I still can't wrap my head around I was able to tag two mature birds.

1st bird:

23.5 lbs
1+1/16" spurs x2
10.5" beard

2nd bird:

21.06 lbs
1" x 2 spurs (worn off - he'd have had huge hooks if I'd got him before all his fighting for dominance.)
9.5" beard

Good season for me with VERY receptive birds to the calls. Called a couple in for friends after I tagged out as well. Now on to scouting for bow season!

Jamie

(I can't add a pic but I'll email a couple to anyone who wishes to help me out?)

Looks like you did .7.62mm. Your birds tied each other with 56.5 points beating me by .5:D:D. Congratulations Sir!
Two bigger birds were reported but the shooter didn't chime in ahead of the season.
Congrats to all that got birds and for that matter to those that got out and enjoyed the season bird or not.
Here's the pic of the call with the logo in it.

Pop me a PM 7.62 and we'll get it out to you.tt

The turkey were plentiful here for the first week of the hunt then mysteriously disappeared.
we saw a LOT of HUGE gobblers but mostly the jakes came in to the decoys first and we wanted to BBQ so.........:shotgun:

Good season guys. Hopefully the ammount of tags to fill in a day goes to two next season. I go BOOM and they hang around anyway. Stupid tastey turkey!!:D
Saw a yote grab a Hen one morning at 5:30am. He came streaking across the field, grabbed it and just kept running. (must have smelled me or saw me) He barely slowed down to take it while he was running.

Great stories fellas. I love to read and learn from others experiences.
I have 3 turkey hunting books and have learned way more poking around here listening to others hunting trips. (i added a few myself)

Cheers

Hey, just thought I would post an update. After trying to hook up at EESA a couple of times to get the call, grnhawg came through big on Sunday, hand delivering the call to me where I was working. Great to meet you sir, and thanks for the call. I sanded it yesterday, and it sounds great. Can't wait to get out to the Turkey woods in the spring and give it a go. I'll have to get one of your custom box calls as well, then I will have a matched set:D

Thanks again for donating the call, and hand delivering it.

7.62mm

Nice to meet you in person Craig. That call will sing, too bad you have to sand out the glass so you can't see the whole logo:):). Here's a couple pics off my newer camera of the first GGN Turkey Call LOL.
