Well, tagged out this morning. The birds were really on today, getting into the bush a little late, 5:45am, the birds were gobbling their fool heads off. set myself up in a little clearing, and gave a few soft clucks, just to let them know I was there. The hens were even trying to compete with me this morning. I waited about 15 minutes before doing some soft calling again, and all three Toms gobbled back at me.
The hens were all around me this morning, one about half way between myself and the roosted Toms, about 50 yards away, another was nested 60 to 70 yards behind me, and the boss hen was 100 yards or so to my 10 o'clock. I knew that when the Toms hit the ground, I was going to have to make an impression.
They flew down about 6:10, and I got on the call. I put a string together about 2 or 2 1/2 min. long, all the while the Toms were going into a frenzy. Gobbling on top of one another, and just going wild.Meanwhile, the other hens were trying to attract their attention, especially the one behind me. She was nested just inside the field edge, going back and forth clucking and carrying on. I waited about a min. Then got on the call hard again.
The Toms started moving closer, gobbling away, so I got the gun up on my knee and waited. I spotted the first Jake moving through the scrub, about 50 yards away to my eleven o'clock, and then the bigger one behind. At this time, the hen that was behind me started to get closer, on an intercept course with the Toms.
The Jake and Tom finally moved out of the scrub, about 25 yards to my 12 o'clock, and I got the RedDot on the Toms neck. At this time the hen was about 15 yards behind me at my 7 o'clock, and the Toms saw her and made a move closer. I moved the gun slightly, following the Tom in the scope, and the hen gave out a PUTT, the kiss of death, she must have seen the gun move, being so close. The Tom lifted his head, and I squeezed a shot off. Went down like a sack of potatoes, and the hen ran right in front of me, about 5 yards away, and the Jake flew off into the bush.
All in all, a great quick morning hunt, and I am kinda sad it is over. I will probably get out with some friends, and do some calling for them, so might get to see some more action yet.
Cheers, and here are the pics:
