LEBARON now sells sks's

Walked in looking to see if they had a refurb black bolt shooter & walked out with this 1954 Tula.

Beautiful quality, too bad about the frankenpin.

I picked up a nice laminate stock '54 Izhevsk tonight from the Mississauga store. I really like it. Nice dark red laminate, reciever, bolt, carrier, trigger group serial numbers match, and all blued!

I'll still be grabbing a chinese one from John when they come in lol

That sounds alot like the rifle I picked up Saturday afternoon, though maybe not as dark. Afterwards I also realized that they charged me the cost of the regular stock, which was a nice bonus.

As for Chinese, I should take a close look to reconfirm that my older Norc SKS is a Factory 26 rifle, in which case I'd only get a Marstar one if they are also military production. I have one of the later commercial ones from SIR that I haven't even shot, but might move it to make way for a military rifle.

Can you post any pics of the frankenpin?

What is a frankenpin? I googled, and found nothing

I am thinking about picking one up, anything I should watch out for? I doubt they'll let me inspect them, but has anyone gotten any with a damaged/pitted barrel? damaged crown? or are these refurbed well?

this will be my first gun, I just got my PAL, I figure it's a cheap toy to get me part of the owners club, until I get my SPS

My SKS and the couple others that I saw were all in good shape as far bores, overall condition, etc, though they were probably mostly refurbs with some mixed parts. The blued finish and unpainted bolts would make them at least a bit more desirable than those refurbs though.

While they may or may not let you look at a bunch, depending on who's there or how busy they are, you should be able to take a carefull look at the one you're planning to get and ask to see another if something doesn't feel right.

Good luck, and don't let the price fool you, since these might be worht half the cost of your future SPS if the sources for them ever dry up and make them scarce!

To better elaborate, from bottom to top:

1) PROPER pin. The IZH first shipment was like this, as have been some of the earlier Chinese imports and the odd Yugo (though some of those had a hot-glued piece of sheet metal in the mag to block it).

2) Lever Arms import. Basically stacked washers with a bolt through them welded at the top and bottom of the mag cover - very ugly. The first frankenpin type.

3) machined cylinder welded into the bottom of the mag cover. Not quite as ugly as the Lever method, but still a frankenpin. This is what present imports have. the mags were not re-blued, the bottoms got a stripe of black paint instead to cover the weld. Serial numbers were obliterated so these are re-numbered on the side of the mag with electropencil.

Think you got em mixed up, the middle one is a Bell import and has the flat top. The top one is the Lever import and has the rounded top. The rounded top Lever imported guns are what we are seeing mostly right now for sale.

I have the Lever Arm pin. I can see how easy it is to snap it right off. Oh well, going to get a Norc 5/10 and modify it to 5rd fixed and put the frankenpin in a dust bin. Good way to ruin collectors.
