Let's see some pic's of your SxS's & O/U's

Thanks Steve/Brian/Jim. I was looking at a much higher grade bar action 20ga when my frequent enablers (Mr. Parks and Mr. Dawe) pointed me to this much more pragmatic choice. The other was a money pit, this one ready to shoot. I am a fool for high grade guns, though.

I once had a H. Clark and sons hammer gun in 12ga with stunning Damascus barrels. However it needed work and I sold it instead of dumping the money into.

A 20ga hammer gun would be great for grouse

Oh I can relate to that, John.

I have a Pape 20 ga hammergun, nitro proof steel 28" barrels, built in 1912 at a time when very few hammer guns were being made. This delightful piece came my way when Ashcroft had a few moments of weakness and his treasure became mine. My Pape weighs 6 lb 4 oz which is a far bit more than Londonshooter's Clark which weighs a very light 5 lb 7 oz.

Bill, that hurts! I was just almost starting to get over her, now this. Nitro proofed steel barrels in proof as well. Chances are none of us will see another 20 like this, I never have.

You are right---20 ga English hammer guns are very scarce. I have never seen another.
I once had a Bland 12 ga nitro hammer gun that Londonshooter now owns.

I have one by Saxton. It bears Birmingham proof marks (not nitro proofed). Rather than an address, the barrels are marked "Laminated Steel" on a well-executed concave matte rib. I know next to nothing about the maker but, along with the owner's initials, the escutcheon is engraved "Sept 1904".

I've hunted with this gun, but I stopped that when while cleaning the gun I noticed what is either a 2" scratch, or a crack in the left barrel. It's impossible to differentiate when viewing from the breech, even though it's just ahead of the chamber. I have a cable camera with a right angle attachment, but I can't focus to a clear image within the confines of the narrow barrel.

I don't have any pictures of it at the moment, but I can probably take a few and post them over the weekend.

Isn't that disheartening when you discover that. I had an English made Manton (not Joseph) SxS. I sent the damascus barrels to a fellow who refinished barrels and wanted to experiment with a new method so he refinished them for free. Well, they turned out to be one of the nicest set of damascus barrels I had ever seen. The pattern was stunning. Trouble was, what appeared to be a crack was discovered in one of the barrels.

It is unlikely that you will see another in Canada. I did come a cross a Pape SXS 20GA hammer gun for sale in my search for a SXS 20. Much like the one you have, but it was in the UK. Simply gorgeous.

Two thoughts. First, spray the area with brake clean and blow on it lightly to evaporate, if it is a crack, it will remain wet for a fair while after the rest has flashed off as the BC migrates out now the crack. For a "proper" test, take it somewhere and have it magna fluxed. Then then you know FOR SURE. It would be a shame to assume it is not a crack and burst the barrel but at the same time it would be a shame to retire a perfectly good SXS because of a scratch.

I have a Mortimer and Sons hammer gun with 20 gauge 2 1/2 barrels and also 500 BPE barrels, i will post some pictures in the next couple of days
