Lets Talk About The 22LR Situation....again :)

I have not noticed any significant shortages. Yes, certain brands disappeared from the shelves but my local gun shops stocked up on other brands. You can't be too picky these days. So, instead of ball, I had to go with hollow point. They also worked just fine.

The 22lr shortage hit Canada over a year ago. Countless threads here on CGN about both shortages as well as stores (mostly in Western Canada for some reason) price gouging ($75 for a brick of 525 Federal, $99 for a brick of 500 Remington, etc.).
Some say there is no shortage and it's all orchestrated by a national conspiracy of gun stores to increase profits.
Some say there is no price gouging and they are just honest businesses who charge what they have to.
Opinions vary.

Even in Ottawa, all store shelves have been empty many times when the shortage was at its worst. The last few months haven't been as bad but from about mid 2013 to early-mid 2014 it was difficult (not impossible) to find 22lr ammo that wasn't marked up to ridiculous prices. Since then it has come and gone in waves about every 2-4 weeks.

I have a 4-5 year stockpile of 22lr ammo that I replace as I shoot so I've always been able to shoot. I also shoot a good amount of target/premium/match grade 22lr ammo (Eley, RWS, Norma) which hasn't been marked up that badly most places and is usually still available due to it's higher regular price. In the past 2 years the Eley Target ammo I usually buy has gone from $50/500rnds to $60/500rnds. That seems to be too much for the regular plinkers who want to blast 1000rnds through a semi in an hour (I do that too from time to time but not with premium ammo).

Al Simmons has the Winchester 333 packs (pick-up only) in stock. At $21.99 per box it works out to $0.07 cents/round including tax.

Lebaron Markham has the 222 round for $12.56 and the 333 round boxes for $17.89. Was there last Friday and they had dozens of boxes of each.

Both up about $2.00 since January 1st.

Haven't seen any CCI or Remington (the only other brands they carry) @ LeBaron's Markham location for about a year.

Home and Hardware??? Wow!!! I wouldn't even consider looking for ammo there. Great pointer. Thank you!

I'm still finding it in limited quantities in places I normally wouldn't think would have it. Purchased a couple of bricks of Velocitors and Segmented at a Home Hardware of all places.

BP must have just got a shipment. Their .22lr shelves were completely empty whe I was there Sunday (Jan 25th)

Anybody used Winchester Dynapoints?

Saw a place selling them for $34.99/500.

I have not seen a shortage - always loads of .22 around at all the major outlets. Keep buying up .22 cal folks, it only increases my share worth and dividends. Thank you very much.

Not the case here. I check every store I go into. Usually nothing.

It's knocking some of the fun out of 22 ownership, for me anyway. When ammo supply gets short...my nature is to stock-up and shoot less as the idea of not having the ammo I like on hand just doesn't sit right. Shooting ammo I'm not confident I can replace=crappy.

I've spoken to CCI a few times in the last year or so, they say we basically have to wait our turn like everybody else. However, I called BS on that at the time...and based on how little is trickling into Canada (and how poor a selection) I think I was right.

Just a heads up.... Lebaron in Mississauga had Winchester M22 today. I got 2. Lots there when I left.

Yes at $62/1,000 rounds I'll pass, especially knowing that many have had cycling issues in their semi's.

Also note that Bass Pro has very limited stock of Win 222 / CCI Mini Mags and they just implemented a "limit" on 22lr until the situation changes. Driving there for 200-400 rounds is not even worth gas money.

I saw Yellow Jackets for about $35 a brick about this time last year and picked up a couple. I should have bought the entire flat at that price ...
