Live round stuck in breech...

So $4 bought me a 1/4" (0.250") steel rod. I think it is 30" long. I thought it would be too thin But after wrapping the entire length in electrical tape it turned out to be the ideal diameter.
I stood the rifle on end and hit the rod with a 4lb ball pein hammer. I had to strike it about 10 times quite hard. The round came out without any further excitement. Enough force was used to pack the bullet about half way back into the cartridge case. Unsettling.

I checked the chamber after cleaning. I could not find any issues. My go / no-go gauges worked as they should. I haven't had a chance to try new ammo.

Thank you Guntech for your advice.

Well after all of that logic defying nonsense what does the cartridge look like?

Have you gotten out the calipers to check the casings dimensions?
