Looking at first AR. Any suggestions,

I've seriously wanted an AR for quite a while, and reached the "Hell, yeah, I'm gonna do it!" tipping point a week ago...until all the banning crap suddenly started up - again. I lost a gun in the last round (no compensation, of course) and, knowing that Paulson has the AR's, "variants", and everything that vaguely resembles them squarely in his ban sights, makes me nervous indeed.

Interestingly, at this point it appears that once a firearm has been given a "prohibited" FRT status, it seems that it's irreversible. I note that, while owners of Swiss Arms and CZ858's are currently safe from prosecution, all those guns REMAINED prohibited. All the country's AR's could be prohibited tomorrow...and Paulson, despite being told to stop, just laughs, gives parliament the finger, and continues on banning stuff at will.

I, for one, am now reluctant to spend a bunch of money on a fantastic firearm (even though I can only take it to the range, need a special permit to transport it, can't take it to a gravel pit for plinking, etc.) only to possibly face losing it before its registration certificate arrives. Perhaps that's all part of Paulson's plan...

The fact that they don't want you to have one is the very reason you SHOULD get one!

The more there are the more daunting it will be for the government to confiscate so I say get one, yes it's a gamble, but every one that you own is one more to grab back, the more it costs the gov the less inclined they will be to come by, I'm surprised nobody has seen this but if it gets public enough globally it could backfire hugely on the rcmp and get their firearms lab shut down for unconstitutional behaviour along with gross incompetence.

I'm trying to bring this debacle to light in us and europe. We need as much spotlight on this as possible.

On a sidenote, for your use I would suggest a spikes tactical, bcm, or daniel defense.
They are all exceptional guns, noveske I find to be overrated and overpriced although of good quality, knights uses propietary parts like the bolt so that may be harder to get than standard parts, same goes for the hk mr223 or barrett rec7.

I'm not a Norc fan, but Can Am is selling them for $599 with a quad rail (shipping in) and Marstar has them for $529 with regular handguards... At that price everyone should have one!

Just becuase they are selling something for cheap doesn't mean I need to get one, so thanks but no thanks.

Well I appreciate all the info guys. I'm not dogging norinco, I just simply don't want one. I would rather support a Canadian company like NEA or even American like DPMS than Chinese. I'm not doubting that the norcs will go bang every time, It's just not my thing. As for round count, I honestly don't think it'll be too high. All my buddies shoot Non restric and we go to the gravel pits and have fun. Taking them to a range will likely not be there thing, so I'll usually be solo when I'm on the AR.

So I was at wholesale sports today and they had the small 7.5" PDW version of the NEA 15. All I can say is that I am glad I got to handle this thing before I dropped 1000$ on one! Not happy at all with the fit and finish and overall feel. The charging handle was stiff and faaaaar from being smooth. The bolt slammed forward like a dump truck pin balling off cars in a parking lot before finally hitting a wall. I don't know if this was just a bad example, but I really didn't like it. They had a Windham WW15 on hand which felt 10x better.
For anyone here that owns one, is your better than I've described?

Regarding Norinco durability if i remember correctly Justin from TSE in Calgary said they had rental Norinco's at their range that had 14-15k rounds through them with out any major problems. I think a few springs where changed if I remember correctly. So if somebody wants to see if they like AR's a Norinco is a good starting point, it should be plenty reliable to get you going and see if you like AR's. If you start to shoot a ton then they will most likely move up to a higher tier AR after you have learned more about them and decide what you like in different brands. But by all means if you have tons of money then spend alot on a top tier AR for your first....all the power to you.

The good thing is that there are AR's for pretty much everybody's budget available to us.

I bought a Core 15 as my first AR to see how much I would actually use it before dropping $2-$3k on a higher tier brand. 1000 rounds on the Core 15 and so far so good.
I also have a DA 556 on the way because at $599 I couldn't resist : ) I'm looking forward to seeing how it compares to the Core 15.

If more people have AR's because less expensive Norincos are available to help them get their foot in the door, then that's a very good thing in my books.

Happy Shooting!

Ive got some time on the AR and am rather proficient with the weapon. I do really like the platform. My only "quam" is weather or not I want a restricted weapon. I really dont like the government having control over my personal property. We will see what happens once my back pay arrives in May. Thanks guys

Another suggestion is to get a nice used one from EE loaded with extras. Sell the extras and you end up with a cheap AR. I got one for $1300 that had about $1500 in upgrades on it.

I can relate to your "quam" for sure. The more people that have AR's the more chance we have of getting some of these silly laws changed; if we give up they will surely win and I'm afraid they won't stop at just taking away restricted firearms from us.

Thanks guys. Ive got one more question here now. A lot of you really seem to praise the Norinco AR (considering its crazy low price).

1-Whats the gun like? I would imagine that the fit and finish needs some work, but overall how does it function?
2-Are the actions smooth?
3-Is the cary handle mounted to a picitiny rail and thus removable?
4- Is it Mil Spec buffer, charging handle etc...
5- Are internal parts like triggers and selctor switches interchangable with after market?

Thanks guys. Any other info regarding the Norcs will be helpful in making up my mind

Finish isn't the greatest and won't win a beauty pageant, but it functions fine. I have had no issues with mine with over 6k rounds through it. You run around in the rain and mud with it and I don't feel bad at all using it, LOL.

Carry handle is mounted on picatinny rail and can be removed.

Comm spec tube. Charging handle is basic, ended up replacing mine.

Internal parts are interchangable - plus it comes with ambi mag release and safety. My other AR didn't have that.

If looking for an AR that you are going to keep for a while. Buy once cry once and go with the DD. Great rifles with great reputation, can't really go wrong for the $1500 ballpark.

Sorry a couple more questions here.

1- Are the trigger/ action/ reciever pins milspec and be swapped with any aftermarket?
2- Will aftermarket barrels, gas tubes.. fit?
3- Can the front sight be replaced with a tridium post or is there "threading" issues?
4- Can the picitinny rail acccomidate any rail mounted accesories such as magpul MBUS/ eotech/ aimpoint or is there "fitting" issues?

I do understand its not an expensive gun so sorry if im being annoying here. I just want to make sure I make the right decision.

Thanks
