As stated I am in the market for a mag pouch and holster for a new Glock 17 Gen 4 factory no mods. Any Recommendations?

I hate to say it, but the first holster I got for my G17 Gen 4 was a Blackhawk Serpa that I still really like. However they get such a bad rep around the firearms community.

Since I intend to get some IPSC action I recently purchased a Bladetech holster from DoubleTap.

Thanks for the tip ^^^ I just picked up a serpa down south. Guys i dealt with were great and let me try out a bunch. I really liked it so i figured not to worry about reviews. I can always upgrade later butI think this should do the trick!

Just beaware sepas can be dangerous, and IMHO are not worth the risk.

I would suggest, as above bladtech, or anything safriland.

Do your research. Part of the problem with Serpa's is that small pebbles, debris and fabric can get caught in the release mechanism and lock it up solid.

Not to mention that ND's can ad do happen with these holsters. Most well respected trainers across North America will not allow students to use them in a course.

This guy was using a Serpa....

G-code holsters are pretty slick too, they're like safariland holsters

I guess it depends on the intended use for the holster, and the level of retention that'll help you choose

I actually did quite a bit of research before hand, but like most products, there are thousands who say great and thousands who say awful. Also, it seems there are other factors that may have contributed to the ND in the video - and he himself didn't blame the gear. So I went with what felt most comfortable and natural for me personally. I didn't feel as comfortable with the thumb release style and I didn't like the twist release either. The guys at the shop did inform me of the possible ND issues but explained why these may occur. They showed me the proper way to use the release and my finger placement was nowhere near the trigger when drawing. I've been practicing with it quite a bit and I really like it a lot so far. That being said, you guys are clearly more experienced than me so I appreciate the advice and I will be even more cognizant of the potential for danger if used improperly.

Really? Please show me thousands of poor reviews for safairland holsters or bladtech.

I am sorry but the serpa is a bad design and there is a reason it is banned from most schools in the states.

You right it dose look like all will be good with the release in the store or on the range. But the reality is with stress, adrenalin and sympathetic finger movement it can go wrong fast. And it has enough that schools have banned them.

If it works for you that is great, but it real is a crappy design.

Seems as though the safariland vs serpa discussion has been discussed ad nauseum and there seemed to be plenty of people on both sides of that equation. However, I was speaking in more general terms: IE if you look up virtually any mass produced product available, you will most likely find countless proponents along with its detractors.

And I'm also not trying to make any recommendations - I was simply stating that I liked it so I went with my personal preference. I liked Glocks the best when I was shopping for my first handgun but had I listened to everyone who stated that "gen 4's are junk, they're clunky, the grip angle sucks, they're unsafe"...etc I may have second guessed.

And I do appreciate advice from those with more knowledge than myself so please don't take any offense. I personally didn't feel the risk outweighed the benefits (good chance this may change in the future if its really as bad as many say) but again, personal preference. If I do put a hole in my leg, I promise you get first crack at "I told ya so!" :p

No. You will never, ever see a serious shooter take Serpa over Safariland. There are very few absolutes in life but this is one.

I have run Serpas before without shooting myself but they do have a number of issues which make them, at best, acceptable if you can tolerate their quirks.

Chris Costa and Travis Haley (former Magpul Dynamics) used this type of holster for their DVD "Art of the Tactical Handgun"

They may be on Yutube if u want to check their action with it

I am not taking any offense and If you really want to run a serpa have at it. I would rather you not put a hole in your leg and just buy a 511 or uncle mikes kydex holster if you don't want to spend any more money.

Holsters are like glass, you get what you pay for. The good ones cost a fair bit, but are worth it. I carry a gun as part of my job, I will use safairland. They are expensive comparatively, but they work all the time.

I have a Serpa that I use as a loaner holster - but I've removed the retention device, I'd hate to be responsible for an incident.

That's a good idea, I never thought about that.
