Looking for a nice 9mm. Pretty much going to be a multi use gun...target, home defense as well as some tactical shooting excersices.
My short list is as follows:

S&W m&p 2.0
Sig 320
Hk usp
Walther ppq
FN 509

Thats in no particular order....i dont have one or the other im leaning towards.
This will be my first firearm purchase btw

Maybe you should post somewhere else until you actually pass your RPAL., Home Defense??
What difference does it make? Im getting the rpal. Its not like im going to be refused. I have no criminal record, i have a bunch of references, i have places to shoot and and hunt if i want.
Whats with the attitude about home defense? If you have nothing productive to say, stay out of my threads. Thanks

Once you're approved a S&W M&P 2.0 for a good entry level 9mm.
Im a pretty good shot and actually my wife is almost as good but we are looking for reliability...obviously Glock almost SHOULD be on my list but i just dont care for them. I like the S&W because they are a huge company id expect decent customer service from them as well as having parts readily availible.
We are booking a range here to try a few guns out, is there anything else that we should be looking at? Thanks for the response!

Well if you are ever asked by the people doing the testing why you want your restricted licence and you say for home defense, good luck in getting the licence. I just thought you were a troll.

Some gunshops/range businesses have "9mm sampler" rental packages that allows you to try out a few different pistols is a great plan; nothing like a test drive to help with the decision.

P.S. and yea, you don't want to tell the powers-that-issue-licenses that your reason for wanting same is home protection - that's verbotten in Canuckistan ;) . "Target shooting" or "collector" are all they like to hear lol.

Maybe you should chill out a little bit. Section 28 of the firearms act lists four authorized reasons for acquiring a restricted firearm, and reason number one is the protection of life. Every single time I acquire a restricted I tell them I am acquiring it for all permitted purposes under the firearms act, including protection of life. The CFO never objects.

Only gun owners whose minds have been brainwashed by decades of liberal social engineering have a problem with owning guns for self defense.

Back on track...

Glock 17 or 19x should be on the list. If you haven’t got much shooting experience there’s no reason they shouldn’t be on your list.
Hk sfp9 is worth a look... It’s very nice
The M&P 2.0 is a solid choice definitely and I vote for the P320 as it is one of my faves!
Based on your listed choices I’m not sure of your budget but I would add the Sig P226 to the list in that case.
FN makes fine pistols just not as popular as The above,

I have a Norinco Sig clone, and a Norinco CZ clone; both are great pistols; the NP58 (.40 s & W) is the nicest finished of the two; but the NZ (9mm) is nice enough and has a better trigger. I shoot the NP58 better. I shoot the Norinco 1911 (.45) better than the other two; but I love and enjoy all three. Low cost, reliable and accurate.

None of the above ? ;)

my advice is : do not buy some entry level gun with idea to learn from it for the better gun later :)

buy the gun that fits your hand well and you love to have and shoot.

Not trying to cause problems guys, im not a troll lol, just looking for some advise.

I chose the guns i did based on 2 things. Online reviews and price. Based on the reveiws all of my choices are top notch but online reviews are not always reliable and id MUCH rather get advise on a public forum or even at the range.
I LOVE 1911s....i have a Tanfoglio Witness in .177 (bb gun) and as far as i can tell its as close as you can get to the real thing. But im worried about the draw. I want to do some tactical shooting so drawing from a holster is a concern and i assumed the shorter, more compact striker fired options would be more suitable for such activities...obviously i could be wrong. Im not totally opposed to a glock but i like to be an individual and do something different against the norm. Glock pricing is a BIT of a concern, they seem to be on the higher end of what ive been looking at and id REALLY like to stay in the tripple digits which is why im not looking at MOST 1911s and glocks. Also keep in mind that my wife will also be using the gun and shes small and never used a handgun other than my pellet guns. Im comfortable using a .45acp but i figure 9mm or .40 would be i bit more managable for her....at least to start with.
Again, thanks for the advise its very much appreciated!

All good choices, I have a late model 1.0 M&P 9, really nice gun and shoots very well.

FYI, I think what Winchester-1897 was getting at and I am sure is aware of in Section 28:

Permitted purposes

28 A chief firearms officer may approve the transfer to an individual of a restricted firearm or a handgun referred to in subsection 12(6.1) (pre-December 1, 1998 handguns) only if the chief firearms officer is satisfied

(a) that the individual needs the restricted firearm or handgun

(i) to protect the life of that individual or of other individuals, or

(ii) for use in connection with his or her lawful profession or occupation; or

(b) that the purpose for which the individual wishes to acquire the restricted firearm or handgun is

(i) for use in target practice, or a target shooting competition, under conditions specified in an authorization to transport or under the auspices of a shooting club or shooting range that is approved under section 29, or

(ii) to form part of a gun collection of the individual, in the case of an individual who satisfies the criteria described in section 30.

There are applications where one "needs" a restricted (in most cases a handgun) such as prospectors for animal protection and if I recall a Toronto politician some years ago due to the threats from a drug gang. But these are extremely rare and very specific cases where the individual would have to prove to the CFO their life was in danger. Every other RPAL holder who can not demonstrate an imminent threat to their life or of others under their protection would have a nearly impossible chance of getting those Special Conditions added to their RPAL. For the rest of us, permitted use 28(b) is the reason to give the CFO warm and fuzzies.

I would go with the M&P. Gen1 or 2.0 is a good choice. I like the gen1 better because the slide automatically goes forward on inserting a magazine in most of them. It is also the best bang for the buck for modern pistols

Since this thread took a home defense turn...

Defence — use or threat of force

34 (1) A person is not guilty of an offence if

(a) they believe on reasonable grounds that force is being used against them or another person or that a threat of force is being made against them or another person;

(b) the act that constitutes the offence is committed for the purpose of defending or protecting themselves or the other person from that use or threat of force; and

(c) the act committed is reasonable in the circumstances.

OP still don't tell the Canadian Firearms Program people you got it for home defense. It is easier to just say target shooting

My NP58 has big grips, as will any Sig or Sig clone. It also has the heaviest recoil of the three. The NZ or CZ whould have a fatter grip than the single stack 1911; the all steel 1911 in 9mm will fit just about everyone's hand, and will have minimal recoil. Norinco NP29 will give you all of the above for $400.00 or less. If you can find a used one to try; should be $300-350; and you will not wear it out.

My Pastor just got a new M&P and it feels nice in the hand, but I find the trigger a bit creepy and gritty. I have not fired it double action yet. My NZ has a good double action trigger, and a great single action trigger. The .45 has a great trigger also.

Hard to buy a bad 9MM pistol, but I bought three average 9mm pistols (all sold now) before getting an extraordinary CZ 75 SP 01 Phantom. So worth a look. Price wise in the same range as others posted on your list. You can spend way more than what a CZ costs, but unlikely to get a better shooter.
^^^Bingo I knew someone would hit the mark..
