Looking to buy my first antique handgun...any advice?

They're absolutely beautiful antiques. They can be hard to pinpoint and are worth mega $$$$. Some on here suggest $7K, I should point out that those prices are recently for non-matching shooter grade C-96 (which still hold and go up in value). True matching collectors pieces are commanding top dollar wherever you look these days, prices have gone up. Parts are hard to source and equally expensive, but still available and cheaper if you go with the Chinese made variety (I myself would not).

All that said if you can source one it's worth every penny.

Here's two ;), both antique.

If you truly have an interest in C-96 I've grown quite the database and can help identify them for you. Feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks very much the helpful information, and I'm sure I will be contacting/bothering you in the near future with questions...and I got to say.im completely jealous, those 2 C96's you posted pictures of are ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL,and that's a understatement...MUCH respect!!!!

I take my old colt( built around 1891) out the bush all the time, yeah it picks up a little used patina but whatever, its my gun and I like to use it. :D I have others for just lookin at.
I have yet find a new Colt or repro that handles or shoots as nice as this old one. The only other gun that competes with the Colt it is my Remington 1875, it's real sweet, it's all original and I just don't shoot it for fear of breaking parts.

Here is my contribution to show and tell.

Apu. What caliber is your SAA? And what's your Remington?

I was referring to collector antique guns, not refinished ones. As I mentioned above you almost don't see collector SAA in Canada due to the caliber restriction and the obsession to shoot Cowboy ammo. I can't see how those guns can appreciate in value. Those guns are also tweaked and most parts are changed due to their availability and gunsmith specialization in the US. No offense meant, just a fact.

While I respect your opinion and do agree there is a large price difference between a refinished and altered antique vs original mint condition I would disagree with the assumption such a gun can't appreciate in value. Just in simple economics alone the buying power of our dollar depreciates while physical possessions appreciate in direct correlation to the devaluing of the dollar. Simply put you can't buy what you used to for the same amount of money, and the same slowly happens to the antique market.

Combine that with our political atmosphere and if there is ever a ban on restricted handguns but the antique class stays the same you can guarantee a feeding frenzy and price jump overnight, altered or not. Alternatively if all hanguns are banned including antiques you can guarantee a overnight devaluation (like what happened to the 12.x classes), even with collector class antiques in Canada.

Finally some antiques will always appreciate and hold large value. There's a pinch frame SAA going for $55K right now that's been refinished, and while that is half or under of what it would be worth even as a relic you can guarantee that while the law allows for antique collecting that SAA will only continue to appreciate in value.

So your entire statement is not exactly 'just a fact' as so much as ' just an opinion' ;).

Scannia, no offense was taken, I just wanted to pipe and get an opportunity to show my toys as well :)

Shooting bastard, the Colt is chambered in 45 Schofield, I also shoot my 455 Webley ammo through it, whatever is handy. The 1875 Remington is chambered in 44 Remington, I use 44 russian brass or cut down 44 special brass with a heeled bullet. Surprisingly accurate for a heeled round.

By the way  , in The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., the "Lord Bowler" character used an "in the white" Remington 1875, much like yours !

That sounds reasonable. First antique... top of the food chain. But then I forgot... rebuilt '69 Charger, graduated high school, two (2) Red Seal tickets before age 24, antique house and furniture, other antique collections (never did find the "kijiji want add for... antique gun or what that I could reply to), or even the time machine that is missing. I need to buy a DeLorean. Is that on the antique calibre list?

How did the "in person advise" go at the gun store? What did you let loose at the range today? Or were you just lookin'? Any "touch base" updates for us yet? Do you have your Kijiji add number so I can reply to your want add? I'm sure I have (and or know) what you need for your collection. I'll even trade "even steven" for your Charger (unseen) because I trust you.

I love your broom handles Loki. When I win the 30 millie today I will give you a call

Thank you. Feel free to give a call anytime you win that $30Mill :D :D.

Speaking of LOKI --- IMHO there has been enough :stfun00b: on this thread for this year. I think it,s time for a thread LOKI or a RED SEAL . I am sure a few people are tired of H:S: poop. Cheers

Not following you on this one BSA. Don't think I gave one :stfun00b: reply in this thread. In fact Newfie_gun_nut and I have been in comms in his search about C-96 knowledge and I do believe I've been helpful.

Could be that I'm misunderstanding you BSA but that posts a little hard to make out.

You must not of looked very hard on kijiji,my add is posted in the Newfoundland stjohns section, and it's the only one posted looking for antique hand guns, so it should not be very hard to find...and sorry if I have too much ambition for you to understand!...2 red seals is not very hard to get WITH the right ambition..I worked very hard to get where I'm too..and the charger was mostly paid for by my parents as a graduation gift,Not that I owe a explanation to you!...anyways best of luck to you and I truly hope you the best!..and I may be misunderstanding you post and taking it the wrong way..it's been known to happen!

I went a local gun shop in town and was talking to a few guys there, they weren't very helpful as I wasn't interested in spending any cash on what guns they had there ( typical service these days),and at the range there was no one there shooting,I guess 2:00 on a wedseday wasn't a good time to try and meet a few gun nuts,I will be dropping by again the weekend...and here's the link to my kijiji add

http://stjohns.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-...-pre-1897-antique-handguns-W0QQAdIdZ438285902

And I would never trade or sell my charger, for one my dad would disown me,and second I would probly cry for at least a year watching her go...you got a better chance of getting my women rather then my car :p..hopefully she don't read this lol

My friends dad won it TWICE(1.5m the first and over 300k the second)!..lucky SOB!...best wishes

Is this your Kijiji ad? That certainly is an interesting strategy for buying antique handguns. How many responses from people wanting to sell antique handguns have you got from this ad? If it's working maybe I need to start looking at kijiji.
