Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a new M&P 9 Pro, and took it to the range over the weekend. After sliding in a fully loaded magazine, I'd rack the slide, and noticed a couple of times that the slide didn't fully return to it's neutral or normal position. The slide was still "back" slightly by about .75 of a centimeter. Simply pushing on the back of the slide caused it to move forward back into it's "normal" or closed position. I did clean, and lube the gun before this first firing, and with an empty magazine I'm unable to replicate the problem.

Any ideas why this would be, or what could be the issue here?

Thanks everyone,
Cal.

Are you using factory or handloaded ammunition? I have had many malfunctions with my pistols purely from using handloads that were loaded too long or too short, namely in my CZ Shadow. Also projectile shape can be factored in. Usually factory ammunition will function flawlessly, try different brands.

I'm using factory ammo...Sellier & Bellot 9mm 124 grain. I don't think it would be from the load of the ammo, since I'm seeing this before I fire a round, just after placing a full magazine in the gun, and racking the slide.

Thanks everyone,
Cal.

Could still be the tight mag issue (leave them loaded for a week or two) causing upward pressure on the slide as it's closing, does it do the same after firing a round? Have you tried dropping the slide using the slide release?

The very 1st time i had my MP9 at the range the first clip or 2 i loaded did that. It was my fault tho i was babying the slide into battery so to speak with my left hand. Now i load the clip with the slide open, then hit the slide release and let her slam shut and haven't had the same issue with factory ammo.

This doesn't sound like the same thing but shooting lead reloads out of my MP created the same type issue. Only thing is it would jam so tight that i would have to jack the slide around so hard to get it to "unjam". Dunno, hope this helps. Good luck!!

Shouldn't a gun work right out of the box??? Just saying...

It would work fine if used as intended - loaded and carried in a holster between trips to the range :D Honestly, I abuse the bag off of mine and never have an issue - drop mags on concrete, shoot 1,000 rounds of lead reloads in one session, "draw and fire one" drills and IA drills for hours and the only sign it's got a high round count is scraping on the inside of the magwell - I guess I'm just lucky but I've never had a single issue.

@Canadian_Eh: I picked mine up at ******. They had them on sale with free shipping recently.

@enefgee: It doesn't seem to do it with a mag of 9 rounds or less, so I think your idea holds water. I haven't tried dropping the slide yet. Next time I'm at the range (this weekend) I'll give that a try, and see how it goes. I'll also load up my mags tonight, and leave them full for a while.

Thanks for the help and the tips people.

Perhaps its more of a user issue than equipment issue?

Yup 'cause as with all DA/SA guns they're much easier to shoot, but let me guess you shoot yours SA only.

Oh come on, I'm sure the advantages of a uniform trigger pull (DAO or SA) is no real advantage... Right?;)

@calvados.boulard: Thanks for the heads up. I sent them a message when I was hunting for one later this morning and they got back to me. Couple of quick questions that may benefit the group at large if they are curious about this model at Badger Arms:

Q. Does yours have these features: Fiber optic front sight, lighter trigger pull, 5" barrel? This article from GUNS Magazine in September 2008 makes it sound pretty ###y: http://www.gunsmagazine.com/Features/0908/Ftr0908.html

Q. Can yours fire without the magazine? It may say so right on the slide or frame. Some can't - mostly for LEO's.

Thanks.

I had a Julie Goloski that would hickup all the time; I broke it in with 1000 rounds of factory winclean ammo, and still it would jam the odd one in the chamber, then the extractor would rip off just enough of the brass case lip that you'd have to push it out with a rod. Reloads were a total nightmare as the chamber was very tight, although shortening them seemed to make a difference, but it was unreliable so It went back in on trade.

I did some research and allot of the police were plagued with similar extractor problems in trial testings. Beautiful to handle and play with, but embarrassing to shoot in public, and certainly not something Id want to use as a duty or match pistol.
Maybe they improved the issue; I'll never know; the only smith Ill ever own will have a 6 shot cylinder; too bad really.
