OK, so I asked a question a while ago whether or not an M14 would be suitable for moose hunting, the answers I got is that it would work, but isn't ideal. However, when I went to the shooting club a month ago and had a conversation with the staff about hunting firearms, they told me that the .308 Winchester wouldn't be good for shooting moose, nor would a 12 gauge rifled slug either. Now I read a few discussions/articles online that seemed to say the .308 Win is fine for moose... so I'm a little confused here. Anyone got any info if the .308 is good to take down a moose or not? I'm not going to be hunting any time soon, but I just want to get this question out of the way.

It's sometimes difficult for someone who has invested in a "Magnum" calibre to admit that a .308Win, .303British, or a .30-30 can kill a moose, (never mind elk), even in the face of evidence that these animals have been killed by those cartridges, and even by arrows. If you understand the limits of whatever weapon and projectile you are shooting and you get that close and if you can shoot accurately to hit the vitals, a .308Winchester or a 12 ga. slug will kill a moose.

.308 is more than fine for moose, .270 is fine for moose. use 175gr bullets and you'll be laughing... just not too many through that m14 unless you upgrade that gas system

slugs will kill a moose period... they just aren't accurate.... like at all... unless you have a rifled barrel. pm me, if you have a 870 we can talk

Whoever told you.308 is no good for moose has their head so far up magnums hole he can see the heels of a .670.

Ditto for rifled slugs, just be mindful of the distance.

Max 300 for .308 and 150 on the slug would be pushing it for accuracy.

Kill don't wound/maim.

Not sure why they'd say 308 is no good for moose other than they they don't know squat themselves. 12 ga slug would be fine as well as long as you don't try shooting beyond the accuracy of it. Know a guy that shot lots of moose with 25-06 .

308 will work for any animal in north america. I've used a 7mm-08 over the last 40 some odd years on most game. Other cartridges too, because I like to, but you really don't NEED anything more than a 308. The 305/M14 platform will somewhat limit your bullet choice, but there are enough good bullets out there to counter that. Keep in mind that a lot of people at ranges have never really hunted anything, or swallowed advertising's pills. FWIW - dan

I plan on getting a 870. I also plan on getting several barrels (with a rifled barrel being one). I don't have one yet though.

I would pass on the shotgun if you have a rifle (your M14 is utterly adequate) unless you are hunting in an area where rifles are not permitted. Shotgun slugs have severely limited effective range by both accuracy and trajectory.

The magnum lovers are unreal. Both .300 WM and a .308 use the same exact projectile. 300 WM is around 500 fps faster. A .308 is still travelling faster than 2200 fps. It's more than enough for anything in North America and I've seen it first hand. The local Taxidermist has everything mounted on his wall, Elk, Moose, Caribou, Bison, Black Bear and Grizzly and all were taken with a .270. So yeah, .308 is more than capable.

The .308...
One Round to rule them all,
One round to find them;
One round to bring them all
and in the darkness bind them.
;-)
Several thousand Moose have been slain in this country with the venerable .308.
