OK so if I interpret it correctly, it's basically a 40-shot US across-the-course match fired at 300 only (presumably so you can co-run it with a other all-day 300m shooting going on alongside). Great idea; I wish you well and hope you get good attendance!

Some comments:

- the offhand slow fire and the sitting rapid fire is to be done on an SR-3 target, which has the same ring dimensions as the 200 yard SR target. This will make these two stages pretty darn *hard* (not a bad thing, just an observation); that's OK, since it is the same for all the shooters firing.

- I think you can fired the match with fewer classes; certainly two classes (combine your class 1 and class 2 for sure, IMO), and possibly even just one. The course of fire you propose is *so* difficult/challenging, that the vast majority of the points dropped will be due to shooter skill, not due to one shooter having an equipment advantage over another.

- I can't recall if it is possible to fire 200 at Cedar Springs, or not?

- If you can only fire from 300, perhaps you could use a larger target for your Offhand and Sitting Rapid stages? Perhaps a Canadian 500y target, or a USA 500y target? The aiming black will be bigger than it has to be, but the scoring rings (5/V or 10/X) will be broadly comparable to an SR target at 200y.

- you might want to include in the match announcement whether paid markers are provided, or whether competitors will be marking their own targets.

Dan thanks for the kind words. When I was doing my research on the NRA M1A Match, in the program guide the style of target used is a SR-3 and everything is shot at 300 yards. As being a target rifle shooter, I know how difficult the 300m DCRA target can be at times. For me anyways. That being said I also think it might be a good idea to have a bigger target like you mention. We will see as time goes on. The match itself is still in the "planning stages".

Just as a little update as Dan stated, depending on the turn out, as of now the match will be competitor marking. If we get a good turn out, I will see if I can arrange for paid marking.

Here are two links I found that describe the NRA M1A match:
http://www.nra.org/article.aspx?id=7440 http://www.nra.org/compete/sponsor/m1a.aspx

As you say, it is at 300y only. I found it interesting that they chose to use an MR-65FC target (a 500 yard target, modified for F-Class). Search for the string "MR-65FC" in this pdf document:
http://www.nrahq.org/compete/RuleBooks/HPR/hpr-book.pdf

(BTW I think your choice of an SR-3, etc is much better than the MR65-FC)

The MR-65FC target has a 30" diameter aiming black. That is nice and big at 300 yards or meters (personally I really like large diameter aiming marks). Being an F-Class target, the rings are pretty tight - a 2.5" diameter X-ring and a 5" diameter 10-ring. At 300m, that's tighter than the 300m DCRA target for TR shooting (which is quite a tight target, which is the bane of many a shooter, myself most definitely included). For shooting service rifles (post front sight), and especially for the standing stage, it would make a lot more sense to use a target with a bigger 10-ring or 5-ring, at least 2 MOA but 3 MOA would be better yet (so a 5-ring or 10-ring something in the range of 6" to 10" in diameter).

Sounds lke a good time hope its successful
wish i could attend but at 9 hours away not a chance
but like the line says build it and they will come
cheers

Great Idea!!!!

M14 is my favourite platform, and even though I don't live close to cedar springs my inlaws live in Chatham so I got a place to stay and a place to leave the wife for the day lol.

Interesting idea. Sounds like a fun shoot.

I would think that based on numbers Class 1 and 2 at the least should be grouped. Are you going to limit it to M14 rifles or will bolt actions and AR's be good to go too?

Yeah I was thinking of combining the groups together as well. Things might flow better that way. As for other rifles, not to sure at the moment. Depending on how the entries turn out. We will see in time.

That will work out perfectly. Also I forgot to mention, Cedar Springs Rifle Range also has barracks on site. When a date is confirm, the barracks can be booked as well.

yeah I have been there a bunch of times when I was a reservist. looking forward to seeing it again.

This sounds very interesting!

I might even see if a few friends would be interested, though we'll need some range time to sight in a few rifles if that's the case.

Seeing how many people have picked up short rifles recently, would those also qualify for this type of shoot?

Just so we are on the same page here, do you mean short barrel M14's? If so yes short barrel M14 would be allowed. They would go under the Tactical/Optic group.

Why have the slow fire prone match 20 rounds, instead of 10?

Why put the short rifles in with the Tactical/Optical class, unless they are scoped? Iron sights competing with iron sights.

Hey tiriaq... let's go and shoot this match! Iron sights all the way!

Cheers,
Barney
