My attempt to recreate the U.S. Army issue M16A4 service rifle.

Here's a rundown of the components:
Rock River Arms Standard A4 complete upper reciever with 20" HBAR profile chrome-moly barrel.
Rock River Arms Forged A2 Lower reciever.
Knights Armament M5 RAS.
Knigths Armament VFG.
Aimpoint COMP ML2.
Aimpoint QRP Mount with spacer.
Knights Armament Bipod/Sling adapter.
Harris Bipod Model 1A2-LM.
Colt/NHMTG manufactured USGI 30/5 round mags.

Still wating on a Matech/Picatinny Arsenal 600 m BUIS and Spec-Ops buttstock magazine pouch. Deciding on a sling and possibly a SureFire light.

Enjoy!

What's considered the 'ideal' location for the foregrip?

I have mine as far forward as possible on my 14.5"... is there a 'correct' place, or just whatever you find comfortable?

The more forward you have it the bigger the triangle you make with your arms and the more stable it is, less muzzle flip – in theory. Everyone’s arms length and style is different so where you have it is up to you. If may feel better up close but with practice you should shoot better with it closer to the muzzle.

I prefer to have the grip a little closer, it's quicker to deploy and maneuver for quick engagements (you know, zombies...) while for longer, stabilized shots I use the handguards. BTW the Matech back-up irons just came in, so I'll post a few photos as I get back from work.

Thanks for all the comments.

I haven't shot this one yet, but I do most of my shooting at Colby Shooting Club in Waterloo. They have an indoor 25 m rifle range and operate on a walk-in basis. Waiting for an ATT for this rifle since it's my first restricted.

The foregrip being closer gives a 'hand on magwell' feel without your hand being on the mag-well. However, placing it further out gives you more control over more of the gun, for faster movement on a 20 inch gun like the above you might want it further out. However, this is all personal preference and your intended use dictates the setup. :) For me, I prefer it in the middle-further out, but thats just me.

now all you need to do is drill a faux auto sear hole to keep with the theme.... :) :)

Unfortunately my machining skills are equal to those of a wet sock. Here are a few more shots with the BUIS installed. The sights co-witnessed nicely.
