M1A Precision Challenge 1.5 MOA

I shot a new best today with my M25. One 5-shot group and four ten shot groups. Results are in the picture...

45 rounds at 0.991 MOA.


This is the first time I've ever shot 10 rounds at or under 1", and I did it TWICE!

I know it doesn't beat my last attempt but it was over 2x the amount of rounds and I still held a sub-MOA average.

Thanks! This is the 5R barrelled M25. It's a 3/4 heavy barrel (Wolfe Modified Medium Weight). I yanked the barrel and polished the chamber and feed ramps. I had sticky extraction but I'm sure that's all gone now.

Pretty amazing performance from the rifle (and you). I think you're running at 2 for 2 on accurizing/building M1As with your Blackfeather and now this rifle. 1.5 MOA at 300 yards now....?
 
Results updated to reflect Rodney's latest and TonyBen's. Has the interest in accurizing and shooting these rifles dried up in Canuckistan?
 
Well I saw this thread pop up this morning and was headed to the range anyways and decided once there that I'd give it a go, hence the less than ideal aiming points I drew on with a sharpie. I was shooting at our long range so the closest backer board is at 200 yards so that's what this was shot at. I might have to try again at 100 yards... If it wasn't for the round I pulled high on the upper right target(up in the barcode), I woulda had a fighting chance! Honestly, I just wasn't on my game today, oh well. Shot from prone with a bipod and rear bag.

Starting in the centre and then counter-clockwise from the bottom right:
group 1: 3.812"= 1.82MOA
group 2: 3.040"= 1.45MOA
group 3: 5.012"= 2.39MOA
group 4: 2.710"= 1.29MOA
group 5: 1.926"= 0.92 MOA

avg: 1.574MOA

^^ That is more than fair shooting from you and the rifle. Shooting at 200+ I find is less fun with my 9x scope so I haven't done than much of it. It should not affect results much so I really need to get out to 200 more. Maybe this weekend.
 
Thanks! My scope is a 3.5-10x. Everybody's got excuses but I'm quite confident I could do better with a target with better, clearer aiming points. The 4 sharpied red aiming points really weren't very good for getting a consistent hold on at 200...
 
Reading this thread kinda makes me long to have an M14S/M305/M1A again! I sold a bunch of my old ones to a buddy who I was lucky enough to get out to run my "Hunter Marksman Challenge" with his (my previous) M1As.

Well I headed back to the range and figured I'd have another go at this with some better aiming points. It was a beautiful sunny day, although it clouded over for the last 2 or 3 groups which was a lil easier on the eyes (sun and snow=bright). Shot at 200yds, prone, off a bipod with rear bag. I let out quite a loud "F**k when I pulled the last round of the last group but oh well, them's the breaks. I'm pretty stoked on this in any case, I figure it's acceptable.

Starting from the centre then top right and clockwise from there on:

1st group: 3.32" = 1.58MOA
2nd group: 2.406" = 1.149MOA
3rd group: 1.676" = 0.801MOA
4th group: 2.998" = 1.432MOA
5th group: 3.53" = 1.686MOA

avg: 1.33MOA

I figure I can confidently say that rifle+rifleman can hold 1.5MOA and hopefully as the rifleman improves, so will the overall performance, haha

For anyone who's curious, the rifle is a 22" M305 with all the usual tweaks done, as well as a NM style oprod spring guide, USGI gas system, SAI muzzle brake, bedded in one of 45ACPKing's stocks. ARMS 18 scope mount with a Leupold Mark IV 3.5-10x40 in ARMS 22 rings. The load was 168gr Hornady HPBT Match over 40.3 gr of Benchmark in Fed cases with CCI 200 primers.
 
Good shoot Rugbydave and very close. I think one of the things that make the Challenge so difficult is the consistency needed to make all 5 of the groups at least 1.5 MOA. I tried a similar challenge on a US M14 site and the consensus seemed to be that 5 groups were too much, so we went with 4. Even with many high-end M1As there aren't that many suceeding for this to be routine.

Those occasional flyers are the bane of this challenge. Took lots of refinement on my rifle to calm these down.

Keep trying and watch the barrel temperature - too hot and I found the groups open, too cold and I get flyers.

Thanks Pr589. Just cross posted it to the US forum as well. I'll eventually re-barrel with a match grade barrel and that should tighten things up some. For now this is more than sufficient for my needs. Just need to work on my skills, haha
