M38 Jeep Restoration

Add the name of Brian Asbury (west and north) of Toronto for parts and pieces. The other place to join is the Maple Leaf Up forum. Plenty of wheeled historic military vehicle owners there.

I did a ground-up restoration on a 1962 CJ3B jeep, what a nightmare. You can't really drive it on the open road, you would need an extra gear to get it up to speed, and the gas consumption is horrendous with that old flat-head

I have a 2006 Jeep, last year of the inline 6's before the mini-van motors. It's a gas guzzler too. A go anywhere guzzler, just like in the days of old. Would love to get my mitts on one of those 40's vintage units.

Come to think of it, wouldn't they be just like them big utility quads? Lotsa gas to run them, not too much power, kinda tippy, almost same weight, fulltime 4x4, no heater.....imagine that...back in the 40's! :runaway: :xes

I had an '98 XJ that was cold, noisy, uncivilized and totally insane as far as capablities.
The 4.0 liter I-6 had a cold air intake and Hedman header, great power and actually quite decent mileage. Unless you drove it like you stole it it would give you 21 mpg easy. On my way to work late at night one time I was tired and driving like your Grandpa after he burned a doobie...25 mpg! And that's with a Ouji board mileage calculator.
And if you drove it like you stole it, it was just below V-8 power.
My CJ on the other hand; the 304 V-8 is like driving an old graintruck. Power is a little better but the mileage is about the same; 9-10 mpg

More 4 x 4 than I'll use. Climb's like a Mountain Goat; posi all the way around.
5 seater Quad IMO

Wow this thread has certainly begun to collect some attention. Great to see! Thank you all for the kind comments, advice, and sources of information. Keep your stories and experiences coming!

Baribal, do you have an idea what the end rough cost would be for a tub shipped up here from willys overland? They don't mention cost on their site, just how awesome their "replitubs" are. I saw that willys acres is running around $2400.

Today I have the new pictures as promised. Warning: they show her in a state of undress. Avert your eyes if you're too young for jeep nudity.

Got her rolled out and removed the fenders, grill, hood, and windshield. Looking at the grill sitting on the side I realized that there's no better branding than a jeep grill.

Got a better look at the individual parts after cleaning. There are actually words and the odd nameplate under that crud!

Here is a quick shot that I grabbed towards the dash with the gas tank sitting in place. I have the original data plates, but they've been tucked away for safe keeping until later:D

Next is a shot of the rear as I hadn't included any pictures of that angle yet. Of note is the original style pintle hitch. Those aftermarket princess auto tail lights will be going...

The final picture for the day is of the rear driver's side leaf spring. I am hoping that all I'll need to do here is replace the U bolts and rebound clips as the leafs appear to be alright.

Hope you enjoyed the update!

No idea, my friend, as last time I got contacts with them was over 10 years ago and it was for a different Jeep model.
Just contact them and I'm sure they will give you prices.

Another company I dealt with for obsolete parts (but I doubt they have very early Jeep parts) is Vintage Parts http://www.vpartsinc.com/ this company buys production leftovers and have unfindable parts like cross members (I'm hard on trucks). They carry HD and AMG parts too.

Awesome pics BCshooter! A great looking shop including a sandblaster. I'm going to do a comparison between getting my parts blasted at a shop vs buying my own setup.
Is that an original PTO winch?! How much of that green machine is a cj and how much is m38?

Thanks Baribal, I'll have to give them a call to compare when I get to that stage.

Good thing you didn't get one of the M38A1s that were modified to mount the 106mm RCL. That would have been a real chore, especially locating a 106.;)

Talk about big balls. Those were our main infantry anti-tank defence system prior to the TOW missile. 800 metres max range and fired off the jeep or dismounted. Either way the backblast created a huge firing signature and meant a hasty move after each shot. We figured on 2, maybe 3 shots, before you got whacked. I forget how many rounds the trailer used to carry, but we didn't think you would last long enough to need a re-supply anyway.

My (reserve) unit inherited its RCLs from the regs when they got the TOWs. Big time fun for us while it lasted.

That Jeep looks familiar. I remember having some summer fun in that thing with JonnySeven!! I've been trying to get him to sell it to me for years now. Anyway, I remember having a conversation with someone at Moparts in Beaverton about tubs for those Jeeps. They restore anything to do with Chrysler and I think they have done a few of them. You might want to give them a call if you need any parts. They may just have them laying around in that scrap yard.
