From what I understand Russia can't export military arms of any sort, so by putting the commercial proof mark on them and calling them a "sporting rifle" they can get around that. IMHO it's just another interesting chapter in the history of these rifles.

I just got mine.....$258 right to the door. Pretty rough.....and loads of cosmo. A bit of rust on the usual parts but not to bad. Bore and crown pretty good. Bayonet functions great,nice and tight. Stock is nasty....very spongy and soft, it's usable, but might get another stock. Not a matching numbers rifle, but hey for $195 it was a good not great deal. Very happy I got one.
Well spent 5 hours cleaning and just got through the metal pieces.

Good free way to get metal heated up: place metal parts a few inches above the flame of a tea candle, it will warm up nice pretty quick

Be careful heating the cosmoline up with a candle or oven as I'm reading that it can burn and ignite at 185c.

Not sure you can knock this deal at $195... I haven't seen many people raving that their $399 M44 was mint. I'm certain most will just refinish the stock to an acceptable condition or leave it as it is, a shooter grade rifle.

Thanks for the pic post! You saved me from another project I may never get around to. I got excited when I saw that they have one left but it looks like a bit more of a project then I have time for so I passed. Enjoy the rifle though. If I had the time and elbow grease left for another project gun then I would surely own a $195 M44 ...
I guarantee you that you are just feeling the excess of cosmoline on the outside of the stock and it is indeed - solid. I have never seen this much cosmo... Once you steam it all out, that stock will be ready to strip/refinish or shoot as it is.
I'd love to see one with the cosmo all removed as I'm sure the stock would look quite a bit better than in the photos in the store listing. I requested a quote as it seems like a good deal and I wouldn't mind a small project if the stock really does need some work.
Finally got around the cleaning process! Boilling water took care of all metal parts and i used heat gun to sweat cosmo out of wood, a little bit remain but for now its good. The stock have fews arsenal repair but otherwise still solid. I think i will leave it alone, the scratch give caracter
The metal average is very good, bore is good, very light frosting but strong rifling and lot of life remaining.
The hard part is to remove cosmo as much possible from inside the stock.
M44 cleaned and waiting the reassembly
