Mannlichers....

Rob I have an an nice Sako collector of rimfire's , and that 78 FS is a rare, rare rimfire !
Does your gun have the USA import marks on the bottom of the barrel? Only would see if you take it out of the forestock, as I imagine it is a 2 piece stock like Sako Man FS rifles centre fires?
I have a beautiful M-78 22lr that was a direct import to Canada, most Canadian imported Sako time fires were issued with the exact same rear and front sights as Tikka type sights.
If you want a picture of mine, send me your email.
I was lucky to find two extra mags for mine, and gave one to Win22(Bryan) as he needed one for his gun :)
Send me a PM if you need any info more on your gun.
Cheers Dale Z!

No import marks. Two piece stock just like the centerfires. Very nicely matched wood grain.

Kudu - my Steyr is ridiculously accurate for a hunting weight rifle. I don't know many people with them, but the ones I know of are all very accurate.

Kudu, 1899, Do you guys have problems with the bolt handle jumping up when removing the safety? On mine, it causes the handle to move just enough to cause a light primer strike. You have to give the bolt handle a nudge after removing the safety.

Looch ... do you have an M-72 like Kudu or a 1903/1908/1950 etc original split bridge action M/S?
On the originals the striker travel is longer and I would be a little concerned if taking it off safe allows the striker to imprint the primer. OTOH you know that the cartridge is held against the bolt face (!)

(Is it possible - if its an original M/S - that the firing pin nut is not in the proper place eg worn etc?)

Mine is a Model M (parked/synth version of the L). Let me clarify - taking it off safety does not release the firing pin. All it does is cause the bolt handle to lift slightly. If you pull the trigger, the firing pin will be released, but it will not strike the primer with enough force to ignite it. Most disheartening the first time it happens while hunting, as you can imagine.

ETA: Didn't mean to hijack - please carry on.

I have never noticed that problem. I will check on it when I get home. I have a Steyr-Mannlicher Luxus (pre-SBS) model.

my bolt lifts when coming off of the second position on the safety (the one where it locks the bolt closed and disables the firing pin) but it does not cause a light primer strike.

This is the same with my scout and all the pro hunter models I have handled/owned.

The Model M is a later Steyr .. it is not a Mannlicher Schoenauer. The locking lugs are at the rear. The "parked/synth version" is called a "Professional" ... the Model "L" is a short action Steyr (eg 243, 308) while your Model "M" is an intermediate length action (eg 270W, 30/06) afaik only the model "M" was produced as a "Professional" with parkerized finish and synthetic stock.

Incidentally I "think" I know what you mean now .. I will look at my Model M Pro .. seems to me there is a feature that keeps the bolt handle down but I need to look at it again

(edit to add ... I should say my comments relate to the PRE-SBS Steyr rifles - I do not know how the SBS rifles are branded or named)

No apparently I dont know what the issue is ..the bolt handle on my Model "M" Professional ("Steyr") PRE - SBS remains stationary when I move from Fire to Safe ....AND .. when I move from Safe to Fire.

There is a pin that extends through the bolt handle root and seems to press on a corresponding spring loaded pin on the cocking piece ... but that is only engaged when the bolt is over half opened ... which I dont think is what you are talking about. Anyway .. cant help.
.
I think Brian46 is discussing an "SBS" action which is a later Steyr design and not at all like the Model M I have and am familiar with.

Model M (and L - and S) actions PRE - SBS are "similar" .. but not identical to the "SSG" rifles

Thanks for the info, AP - but not really my case. As long as the bolt handle is pushed down all the way, no problem. It's like the stiffness of the safety causes other parts to "jump" when it is released. I've had the bolt handle raise a good 1/2" in some instances. The current procedure for firing is: safety off, push handle down, fire. I should take a video...

Is that a Blacktail buck? I used to hunt them on Texada back in the 80's. The biggest one I got was offhand with an open sighted Steyr-Mannlicher Pro. at about 20 yards in the pouring rain. Wish I would have taken pictures because it was the biggest Blacktail I ever saw on Texada.

If you see any of these M-S plastic scale models for sale, please let me know. Thanks.

Now that I have this newer Steyr SBS Big Bore in .450 Marlin, I'll have to get me mitts on one of the earlier, split bridge models so I can have both classic and modern versions. It would be nice to have an MS in 9.3x57 so as to spit fourth large lead boolits.:)
