Mannlichers....

George C. Scott shooting at a Hammerhead with a Mannlicher-Schoenauer in the movie Islands in the Stream (1977). Hemingway himself actually kept a Mannlicher 6.5 on board his boat as a shark gun...shooting them when they came around to spoil his big game fishing...Although he said it was too good for a boat gun.

By the way, George keeps missing the shark bearing down on his swimming son, so his rummy first mate (David Hemmings) steps in to handle the job with a full auto military BAR. I guess sometimes a 6.5 just isn't enough gun.

^^^ I watched that movie not too long ago... I think the rifle in the movie is a 9.5mm, the muzzle looks way to cavernous to be a 6.5.

This gives me great excuse to watch it again to check that out. Although my brother told me it was the worst movie he's ever seen .....

Have always had a thing for those full stocked rifles!
Makes it even harder when you're a lefty! LOL
My first full stocked rifle is a custom lh Ruger 77 in 376 Steyr with a Wenig pepper laminated stock.
I also have 3 Ruger RSI's in stainless (Lipsey's Editions); a 10/22, a Model 77 in 250 Savage and a No.1 in 257 Roberts
I also have a Sako L691 LH Carbine in 30-06 that is unfired. Have the original peep for it as well. Never knew they made these left handed until I found the one here on EE last year. Would love to find one in 6.5x55 and 9.3x62 as well, as they were catalogued, as per the paperwork/manual that came with this rifle.

I am building a Winchester Model 88 in 7mm-08 and am currently trying to locate a nice piece of walnut to put a full length stock on it. Saw pics of John Wooters custom rifles so configured in a rifle magazine article years ago and have always wanted one! Also have a custom Model 88 in 338 Federal that I want to put a full length stock on as well. Will make a great pair of hunting rifles!

Question: What type of walnut would you choose and why?
I really like the French and New Zealand walnut, but was just e-mailed info on a blank in nice Turkish walnut.

Looks like the Mannlicher thread has faded out....unless someone else starts posting some pictures.

You bump it every couple months, no chance of it fading out...

Here is a RARE Ruger M77 MKII International in .358 Win... as far as I know only 25 were made in 1993.

Nice rifle Hoyt!

I have asked Lipsey's if they would do their RSI (either Model 77 or No.1, in the 358 Win and/or 338 Federal...I would buy either, or both!
They say the largest caliber they can do for their stock/end cap configuration is a 308 caliber cartridge.

Just going to have to build one myself one of these days!

Ruger would do the RSI in .338, but the .358 required some modifications... they left the outside stock dimensions the same but used a heavier profile barrel and widened the channel to accommodate the larger O.D... I suspect the fragility of the stock is what caused them to abort the configuration... I would have been just as happy with a 18.5" or 20" M77 MKII carbine, the same configuration as the 1989 run of M77 carbines.
