About the same time it became socially unacceptable to say someone can't swim, so now we say "non-swimmer", and "non-reader" and so on.
I would still argue it's wrong. The word was taken from Mexicans, who spell it with a J. The government isn't always right, look at "Indian affairs", that branch of government that has nothing to do with people from India. (they've recently changed their name, but the fact remains they used that name for decades, well past the time when calling them Indians wasn't socially acceptable.)
Political Correctness has a shelf life. Retarded, negro, Indian, among others, where in their day, the accepted term for these people.
