Marlin 336 Pics and Info...

Ok, here's a couple random shots I've posted before. These are .30-30's.

Excellent!
Nothing goes together quite like:
Fish and chips,
Ham and eggs,
Alcohol and firearms... :p

I'm a fan of fixed low powered scopes-mainly Leupold.I can't think of a better combination than a 2 1/2 x scope on one of these rifles if the main purpose is hunting deer/black bear in typical brush country where a long shot is 100 yards, and most of them half that

Got a 1981 Glenfield model .30A. Love the rifle so much I will be purchasing a Marlin 1895G .45-70 guide gun next week.

Funny

Its funny, I keep looking at all these new bolt action 30-06 rifles for upwards of $800-$1200 these days new. Thats not including a scope!

It makes me just wanna go out and spend a few hundred bucks on a nice scope and hunt my Marlin 336 in 30-30 until either the gun prices come down or I drop dead.

$500 for new Marlin 336
$200 for new scope
----------------------
$700 for a wicked hunting rig I could have for YEARS and be happy with!!!

I've got Williams FP sights on my 336 and my Guide Gun. The Guide Gun also has a Leupold 2.5x28 IER scope so I've got the best of both worlds.

Leupold

That Leupold FXII 2.5 fixed power scope, can it be mounted on the receiver like a standard scope too? It says it is good for anytime you want to mount your scope infront of the receiver, but I want to mount in traditionally onto the receiver.

Is there any other good 2.5X fixed scopes out there?

I too, like the low, fixed power scopes. The old steel tubed Weaver K2.5 took a lot of abuse and kept on ticking. The Bushnell of that vintage were a bit brighter, but a much weaker scope, in a physical manner.
In the same time period a hunter going on a long, guided hunt in BC,or further north, considered himself well equipped, with a Lyman Alaskan on his Model 70 Winchester, in either 30-06 or 270.

I've got the scope mounted on a rail, and I don't think the eye relief will permit mounting it further back, but I imagine that there must be another fixed 2.5 power that could be mounted on the receiver.

I'd like to hear from the guys who have taken Elk, Moose, Bears etc with their 30/30

I stood beside my brother while he made a bang-flop, one shot kill on a bull moose, with the long barreled Model 94, in 30-30.
However, I like to tell this story. I must like it, because I have told it on here at least twice, already.
During the depression years of the 1930s every family living in the boondocks of northern Canada, lived on wild meat. Most shot it themselves, but others were given meat by friendly neighbors, who happened to be better hunters.
I grew up in this environment, thus know it first hand. However, for this story I go to a man who was a depression era moose huter, but from a different province.
After the war I became close friends with this former meat hunter from the 1930s. I knew he wouldn't BS to me.
He always used a 30-30, a model 94. He told me that during those years he had shot 30 moose. I asked him how many he had wounmded that had gotten away. He thought for some time before answering. Then he said, "I can't think of any moose that I hit that got away from me!"
