Meeting place for Newbies and Mentors - Sask.

Well if it is law I sure hope they tell me soon.

I do many Hunter ed classes, as well as seperate PAL and RPAL courses not to mention all the challenges.

I find that the Hunter ed course including PAL is the most popular way to go, and instructors may push it a little more to fill existing courses they have running.

Thanks, that's what I figured. Guess I'm going to look elsewhere to take my PAL classes.

This may be a little late for this thread but if anyone is in the Humboldt or surrounding area. I have plenty of firearms and reloading info to pass on. Also have a good selection of reloading data to teach new comers with. Always willing to help out a new "nut".

Hey all, Im in North Battleford, know my way around rifles pretty good, not to bad at reloading either. I have a selection of calibers including .17hmr, 7.62x39, .308, .223 ect. As well as a couple of shotguns. Ive got semi autos, Bolt actions, lever actions and pumps. Used to be a rifle coach when I was in the Army. Anyone in the area need any help PM me.

Hi, Im from regina and I am new around here. I am going to start reloading for my 9mm, but i am unsure what powder to use. all the other stuff makes sense to me since i am a Machinist. I just want to know where to start with powders. any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Allbrian, if I were you I would pick up a good loading manual. Hornady, Speer etc and follow the load data. Record and keep journals of how much gr of powder vs gr of bullet. Don't max out, start smaller and work out a good load. Remember, however much you change the powder/bullet weight will affect shot placement, so keep them separated and labeled in diff. boxes etc. One very good word of advice, work out a routine, stick with it. If you think you may have double charged and the bullet is seated, chuck it. There are lots of good pistol powders out there so see what they recommend in the book and experiment from there. Good luck and have fun!

Hello folks. After years of procrastinating I have finally decided to take steps towards getting my PAL. I phoned a local instructor (in the North Battleford area) and inquired about the PAL classes, and he told me that it is required by law in Saskatchewan to take hunters safety classes to get your PAL in Saskatchewan. I just want to punch holes in paper, I have very little interest in hunting at the current time.

So was the guy bulls**tting to get more money out of me? Or do I really have to take hunters safety with my PAL classes?

I've never taken the Hunter Safety Course, just went to Gunworks and challenged both the PAL and RPAL exams. I thought you only needed Hunter Safety if you actually applied for a hunting license!

Any instructor should be more than willing to do either/both challenge tests for anyone. Not just ones connected to buisnesses.

Yes you only need the hunter safety if you want to hunt. But I also find alot of people that hold PAL's and just shoot, taking the hunter coarse later in life because of changes in social groups, hobbies, location, need, ect, that wished they had done it all at once way back when.

Hi everyone. I'm just getting into shooting and have picked up a .308 and a .22 rifle. No previous shooting experience, but looking to get into hunting and recreational shooting. I'm in Saskatoon.

If anyone wants to help out a newbie, I'd gladly trade some pointers for a couple pints afterwards. :)

Hello there, recently got into hand gunnery and looking to refine my technique, are there any handgun shooters in the yorkton area that would be willing to do some lessons or tips?

Hey all, I am also new to CGN and to guns in general, only really took an interest in them last year. I was wondering if there's anyone in the Swift Current area that might be interested in going out and firing a few rounds? I have a couple 22's and a 17, but I'm interested in getting something a bit bigger and was kinda hoping to try a few out before deciding on a caliber. I will bring my own ammo of course, and buy beers afterwards.

Check out the Yorkton gun club at York Lake park. I know a couple members there and am sure they would help you out.

newbie in Saskatoon

Hello all,

I'm a new member, living in Saskatoon. I'm not really looking for mentoring at the moment, nor am I qualified to offer it. Just thought I'd pop up and introduce myself to the local stubble jumpers. I'm a newcomer - actually a "re-comer" - to the shooting sports; I was interested in guns when I was a kid on the farm, and then put it all on the back burner for 30 years while living in the city. I've recently become re-interested in the shooting sports and bought myself a couple of coyote rifles. I'm also interested in collecting and shooting WWII milsurp rifles, and thinking of buying a Lee-Enfield No4.Mk1 and/or a Mosin Nagant (for starters).

I have joined the SWF and so have access to their range, although I haven't used it much yet. I also have access to some farmland, but it's a long drive out of town.

hi, i'm new to the site and was working on my res and non res. does anyone know where i can take the pal courses and exams?

Hi, I live in the Regina area. I got my PAL & RPAL back in 2009 but finally decide to get my first gun. I am really as green as you can get, and I would much appreciate any advices and mentoring form the vets. I am thinking of getting a Savage Axis SP and get a RWL membership.

If anyone is willing to give me some pointers it would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

One place is the Sask. Wildlife Federation. I believe classes are limited opportunities so you may want to call right away so you don't miss them.
http://www.swf.sk.ca/

I didn't go to the classes. I took them online and then challenged the tests.
I think it was through this link: http://www.saskhuntered.ca/courses.php

If you're completely new I don't know how good it is but if you have some previous experience I found it pretty decent.

This is another link I came up with tonight: http://www.huntercourse.com/canada/saskatchewan/
I don't know anything about it though so I would research it carefully.

If you're just looking to challenge the PAL, there is also a gentleman at Wholesale Sports who can help you. Ask for him at the firearms counter.
