Mentoring

Hey Guys my name is Wes, I'm 28, a welder and have had my PAL/RPAL for a few years and just got my Hunting License so I'm looking for a mentor. I'm located in Edmonton Alberta.
I am interested in hunting coyotes, black bear, mule and white tail deer, all upland birds and waterfowl, hare, pretty much anything. I would also love to learn how to fish properly as I was never any good at it, and I've never tried ice fishing.
I currently own a Winchester '94 .30-30 and reload my own ammo for it, and I have a Ruger SR10-22. I'd like to eventually get a .300WSM so I could expand into bigger game once I have some skills.
I'd even love to just go gopher hunting if you want someone to shoot with.
Thanks

-Wes

Hi everyone,

I gather that this is a bit of a shot in the dark but wanted to put an oar in the water anyway.

I'm 33 years old and new to hunting, living in Aurora ON. I grew up around guns with a father hailing from Kirkland Lake. He hunted for years, though I never had any interest until recently so he and I never got out together. Problem is he's just a little too late in life to get out there with me now. I'm a member at one of the gun clubs around here and well versed in firearms safety and ethics. I just have no experience with hunting and hope to find someone who does who's willing to take me out for my first time.

I've passed the OHEP course, have my small game license, and my Outdoors card (w/ 3 turkey tags) is in the mail. Figure I'll start with wild turkey, see how it goes, and maybe work my way up to bigger game.

Ideally I can tag along with someone's party hunt, happy to donate any spoils to the crew in exchange for some insight and experience! Also, not looking to piggyback on anyone's private land arrangement or "secret spot" - Happy to get out in one of OFAH's designated areas, even pay your permit to get out there if it means I can add some value to the equation.

Anyway, just putting this out there. It's my message in a bottle :D

Hello All,
I am 35 year old. I have PAL and RPAL. Though i am not new to guns but my knowledge is limited. I am new to hunting and know next to nothing but very eager to learn. I am looking for duck, turkey or deer hunting opportunities. Looking for a mentor i could tag along with and learn from. I have skinned goats and chickens a couple of times and im guessing dee and ducks wont be much different so i can help with that. Thanks in advance.

Hi there, my name is Adam. I'm 31 years old, from Vancouver. I've just recently finished my CORE, acquired my FWID number and hunting license etc.
I've been on one hunting trip with my buddy, his dad and uncle, for Moose. They mostly just drove around and around a specific area hoping one would just pop out into the open for them.
It wasn't my style.
I'm an outdoorsy guy so I'm looking to go into the bush and camp out and track and Work for my sustenance.
Deer. Boar. Moose. Elk. Grouse. I'm in for anything. I'm just looking to learn. So I wouldn't mind to tag along and help out with the whole experience.
I have a Remington 700 in 30-06 (and a Ruger 22 takedown).

I'm also probably going to spend some time in HAIDA GWAII. I think that would be a great place to obtain some mentorship/experience, if there's anyone around those parts.

I'm also a trained Red Seal Chef working professionally for over a decade. So I am able to butcher. And cook up some fantastic meals. Cooking by campfire is one of my fortes.
I don't mind putting in work.

Cheers!

Hey guys, my name is Clayton, I'm 29 and live on Vancouver Island(colwood) I've been hunting for 4 yrs now with minimal success mainly grouse. I've seen deer, doe's mainly here and the bucks I've seen were either too far away across valleys or outside of legal shoot. Long story short, I'd like a mentor to assist in understanding behaviour and patterns also ruts times and post rut. I have a .308, a couple .22lr and a 12gauge. I also did my first moose hunt last year with no success on my bull draw in 3-31A Thompson, but primarily a road hunt which i discovered wasn't totally for me, although it may have been the company. So, info discussions over the phone or via PM would great. I also have a physical detriment of arthritis which slows me down but won't stop me from trekking out there.

Thanks Clay from VI

I'm willing to take a guy on in Niagara, I have a farm in wainfleet and I've been hunting since I was a boy. I'll start with small game then work up to turkey and deer. We're looking for a new addition to the hunt club but we would rather give a new hunter a shot first as we all got helped along the way. We're all in our 20's and if you could fit then shoot me a pm.

if anyone is in grey bruce area, message me
looking to do deer hunting this fall, have some property but always interested in more opportunities and guidance
also looking to do turkey hunting with bow this fall, as well as deer
and coyote in fall/winter with rifle

Hey, how you all doing?

First post here for me, im planning a trip to a friend who works on a farm outside Ottawa sometime during prime hunting season 2018. Will be staying on the farm for 3-4 weeks and im basicly here in search of locals who know their way around the bush. Im swedish myself and do quite a bit of hunting over here, but I learned the hard way when living in New Zealand that what I know does not necessarily apply on other continents.

Im not looking for professional guides, wining, dining and a massive trophy shot from the vehicle, what im looking for is coming along for the normal trips that you do every other weekend weather it be for deer or ducks or trout, or for more pest-like critters like coon, skunk, coyote, grey squirrel etc.

Any advise on when to go or who to contact will be greatly appreciated.

Take care!

Hello,

Im 31 in the Edmonton area. Would be looking for a mentor. I've had my pal and rpal for about 5 years now and done nothing but target shooting.

I will pull my weight and don't expect someone to hold my hand, Never really had any exposure to hunting so no experience and I have a ton of questions.
I've been hesitant to explore asking others because of the horror stories of other people having their hunts ruined by inexperienced people, and don't want to be 'that guy'

I find it funny there's tons of people asking for mentoring but very few really offering
The more we get into it and trained the better
I think most folks would even offer to pay for the time and effort exerted by the experienced people

I offered 2 or 3 years in a row...... not one hunter actually showed up (from here) , though many contacted me to sign up , they all cancelled for some dumb reason or another....And on all those hunts newbies could have joined us on..... animals were harvested and a good time had by all.
I have found that many new hunters are just looking for an easy way in ... almost like they are looking for a free hunting guide rather than truly wanting to be mentored.

I won't be offering again.

if you're in ontario i'd be willing
i dont mind being the newbie that does the lackey jobs if it means i get to learn how to do things properly.
i'm in sw ontario

And that folks is how hunting eventually got banned in Canada. MNR didn't sell enough licenses to keep up its efforts and the fees tripled in some cases. The vegetarians and vegans voted to have hunting banned in most of Southern Canada.

All lost their hunting privileges due to lack of interest and access.

LOL come on now , let's not get all melodramatic haha
I'm still mentoring hunters, just not going to be offering "here" anymore.

The only offer I could even possibly make would be to learn the hard way alongside somebody who is looking for mentoring, I suppose. I'm new to hunting myself, this year actually, but I have been looking into places to scout at already and I am looking to do some hunting in the fall for Turkey and Deer. In the meantime I am doing small game until the Migratory Birds become available, then I'd be doing one or the other. So, given that I am not an experienced hunter, nor do I know anyone who is experienced, all I could offer is to go with someone else who wants to learn the hard way with me. LOL.

As for myself, I am not looking for an experienced hunter to go with. I got into this exactly because it requires no one else - it can be solitary and that's a bonus for me, not a drawback. Not that I wouldn't go with someone else, though, just that I have no expectations of this becoming a buddy thing...

Did you do your hunting course anywhere near Kitchener that you'd recommend? I only just started looking recently, and not too hard, but it doesn't seem like there are a tonne of options

I believe I took the course with one Robert Viscardi. He offers the Hunting course, and the combination gun + hunting. He was a really good teacher. He will also let you know when the course will start and let you pick up the course manual early if you so choose.

Thanks for the info.. I see he's got a course posted but I've got a wedding that day. I'll have to keep an eye out in the future
