Mentoring

Hey

I am looking for someone willing to teach me during moose season in northern bc. I will have the 19th to 30th of October off. I am 25. I am in good shape. I can easily hike 15+ km a day. I don't drink when hunting. I am relatively inexperienced but have hunted small game. I live in terrace. I am willing to go as far as Prince George to meet up with someone.

Not sure if you have had any response. I cannot mentor you but can give you some suggestions. Find a decent area and familiarize yourself with it. Set up a decent camp and get up well before daylight. Have your sight lines figured out and be in position as the light becomes legal. This is how to start your day. I live in the area you mentioned and am familiar with the type of bush you will be working in. It can be frustrating. Lot of people hunt the edges of lakes etc particularly at first light. Always consider what it will take to pack the animal out before you take your shot. Good luck.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that wanted to start shooting and hunting a bit later then some.I'm 32 and have recently taken more of an interest in both hunting and firearms even though my father has always hunted. This seems to be a great idea seasoned hunters willing to share their experience with new hunters and shooters. From my experience it seems to be very difficult to find someone to mentor you if you weren't born into a hunting family or group.

I'm 35 and finding it hard to meet anyone to go hunting
I even have several hundred acre of mixed land with deer and turkey on them
Just wanting someone with experience to give me pointers and they could use their tags too
Most people start as teens and form big groups we are the minority
If anyone is in sw Ontario grey Bruce message me
Must be safety conscious and mature

Hi/Bien le bonsoir,

I recently got my licence for big game and wanted to hunt some whitetails in Quebec (I live in Montreal) but like most I am completely and uterly confused regarding where to go and what to do.
Anyone open to show the ropes to a new guy ?

I'm a young adult male hunter looking for a mentor/friend based in the GTA (Ontario) to get into the sport. Have PAL, Outdoors Card, 3 year small game license. I would prefer to hunt small game and deer to start. I work 9-5 Monday to Friday, so only able to hunt on Saturdays and Sundays (have some vacation days I can take for a weekday hunt this fall). I've shot 1 inch groups at 40M after only being at the range a few times with a poor bench rest. I consider myself patient, safe (no drugs/alcohol) and respectful. I upgraded my rifle with a bipod, and can hit decently well at 40/100M (I need to be ranging in at 100 yards next time ah). Have not tried off hand shooting yet, but still shooting I can hit the target.

I don't have my deer tag yet because I've been desperately trying to find someone to take me, or go with me. I believe at this point I would only allowed to get an antlered tag. Looking to hunt at Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park this Saturday if I don't get any takers. I live in downtown Toronto, own a vehicle, and willing to travel under 3 hours drive to wherever I need to be. I would be willing to hunt anywhere as long as it's safe for me. I'm 34 and work a professional job.

Hello everyone,
I'm a young (23) year old male from London ontario looking for some hunting mentoring. I've completed the hunting course and have had a RPAL/range membership at crumlin for 5+ years. I've recently become interested in coyote hunting but have no friends/family to teach me how to hunt.
I work a professional job (shift work=3/4 days off a week) and have a truck/am willing to travel some hours to learn. I have multiple rifles and experience shooting distances from 100-500m .
Thanks!

Hello Mike,
I am an IT Professional and have my RPAL, and outdoors card but Alas never been hunting. Really interested in deer hunting. I am seeing a lot of mentoring requests does anyone reaches out to respond?

Hey, very difficult to find anyone online. There's facebook groups, got invited to one but the guy wasn't really solid so I decided not to go. I'm really starting to think hunting is a closed circle kind of thing ... not a lot of people seem to be open to mentor or let strangers tag along, sort of like society operates so not surprised.

My girlfriend's brother's father in law offered to go hunting with me. You really have to put the word out and ask anyone you know or come into contact with to be able to find a connection.

19th is the last date of the rifle hunt, and we don't have land to hunt on, these things look like they have to be prepared months in advance. Going to be out of luck until the Dec 4 to 8th shotgun hunt ... thank god for my 12ga!

I offered 2 or 3 years in a row...... not one hunter actually showed up (from here) , though many contacted me to sign up , they all cancelled for some dumb reason or another....And on all those hunts newbies could have joined us on..... animals were harvested and a good time had by all.
I have found that many new hunters are just looking for an easy way in ... almost like they are looking for a free hunting guide rather than truly wanting to be mentored.

I won't be offering again.

That has also been my experience on a BC forum.

Practically everyone who wants a 'mentor' more or less want a 'guide'. They just wanted an easy way to get an animal. Most have not spent enough time at the range to get oneself ready. The ones that I did take out and shot at animals pretty well wound them and eventually lost.

I won't offer again either.

I offered to take one guy from here black tail hunting because he was really keen on learning about these deer. I don't generally take anyone but my very closest friends to my black tail spot and even then only 3 people have been shown that spot or area. So I agreed to take this guy who i won't name hehehe but told him I would have to blind fold him for the last 20km or so. I think he thought i was crazy or something and never did repy to that message haha but for real, I wasn't kidding.
anyhow, just thru word of mouth thru friends, family and associates I manage to mentor serious young hunters and a few older ones almost every year and will keep on doing that as long as there are keen and more importantly "dedicated" new hunters who show up when a spot is opened up for them...... even if they gotta where a blindfold hahaha

I had put the feelers out for leasing out /renting out my place/ and/or mentoring. I agree that more or less everyone that was looking for a mentor was really looking for a guide. I'm done hunting this season (freezer full and recent surgery) but there are still a couple of bucks on my property that are ready to retire. One is an old white tail with ratchet rack. I don't know if it's an injury or genetics, but he has to go.

Initially I had thought of renting out our land/cabin. However, after consideration, I decided to mentor instead of renting out our property. For the rest of the season, I'm mentoring a young employee who moved to Ottawa from out of town and otherwise doesn't have any local hunting opportunities.

Prior to buying my own place, I spent years networking and knocking on doors t obtain permissions and find secret spots just east of Ottawa. Those are guarded spots i will not share with anyone (blindfold or not).

I've had a couple of guys PM me looking for mentoring and hunting ops after I had asked on the forum for advise about hunting leases. I decided to not give any one a chance this fall since we were already in the hunting season. I may call one or two local guys this summer and see if they'd be up for a work weekend (planting food plots, making trails, painting/repairing blinds, clearing shooting lanes, and chopping fire wood).

Some new hunters need to understand that my season starts the day after this season ends. During winter, I actively manage, survey the deer, cut down forage trees, pack down running lanes, shoot predators, supplement feed, keep water holes open,....

my 2cents.

Hi,

i am from Vancouver, BC. wife and i just got our Pal. we are looking to buy our first rifle or two. we wanted to find out if there is anyone local who would take us out and let us try your different calibers of rifles. preferably a .270, 30-06, 308 and a 300 win mag. i think she will be good with a 30-06 and i am shooting for a 300 win mag but it would be nice just to feel the difference between rifle calibers before purchase. we are looking to hunt mostly moose and elk and maybe a deer or two.

Hey everyone, I am new to hunting (haven't gone once) but have my pal and have taken my Hunting course.

I live in Brighton, Ontario (eastern Ontario) but can travel, I'm not a young lad, I am 36 married with children.

I would love the opportunity to learn from experienced hunters, All of my relatives that hunted in my family have passed away including my dad when I was 25 and I never got the opportunity to go out with them.

I would like to shoot ducks, and deer and maybe move up to Moose someday after gaining experience.

I have a couple Pals that could benefit (newbies) as well from Mentoring.

If anyone is interested in teaching some novice hunters the ropes, that would be fantastic.

Regards and thanks in advance.

Neil

Looking to hunt ducks/geese, and maybe even the elusive snow geese, in Eastern Ontario. Looking for a mentor, or a land owner, or another newbie with a half decent spot so we can learn together.

I can offer guns (loan), pretty decent gear, hot chocolate, amusing stories, political ramblings, walking dead theories, or straight up cash.

My dad retired and moved away just as I was finding time in my life to hunt. So looking for either a surrogate dad or a brother from another mother. PM Me.

So brand new to hunting literally finished my Hunter's Education Course last week and am eager to start a new journey of my life. I am located in Toronto and have never done any hunting in my life but I am an avid angler so this seemed like a natural progression as well as get myself some meat for the years to come. I am 30 years old and already have my PAL and this has always been something that has interested and now I can finally partake, but not really sure where to start. Since no other season is really upcoming any time soon I figured the Spring turkey hunt is the place to start. I have some knowledge (hunting guides/youtube/shows) of turkey hunting and know it takes a lot of patience and determination which I am willing to put forth.

Sorry for the rambling but basically I am wondering if anybody here is willing to take me under their wing and show me the ropes of turkey hunting.
