Merry Christmas to me! Early present, CSA carbine with lots of pics!

That should make for a stiffer, more secure mounting.

Actually, there was just barely enough room for two rings, the second ring overhangs a bit, there's probably 2/3's contact on it. But it is still more stable than with one ring. Perhaps firing a few hundred rounds will make it snug up with the other ring a bit better.

So, what's that giant chunk of steel on the front of your rifle?

It's a flash hider I designed. It also does a heck of a job re-directing muzzle blast down range. It's still just a prototype, so the outside config hasn't been completed yet, but it's the internal design that's the most important anyway. It works quite well, I'm getting about 95% flash reduction. :)

I'm glad the rings worked out for ya Clobb, but now you have me interested in your FH! Ive got a few ideas to try on a Czech brake, but I'm interested in what you came up with. I'm going for something that does 2 things: reduces or eliminates muzzle rise and redirects the blast down range. Care to share some pics?
For anyone interested, this is the ring I used:

With a set screw down the bore in the lug and dual clamping bolts I dont see it going anywhere :D Stevo, how did you go about mounting the floorplate on your mag?

Stevo, how did you go about mounting the floorplate on your mag?

I made an L-shaped bracket to retain the spring. It's attached to the mag body by the two pop rivets in the pic. I removed material from the lips on the floor plate so it would fit over the mag body and then riveted the floor plate to the L bracket.

I don't mean to hijack this thread....but I'm not really interested in showing pics of the internals yet as it's still a prototype. I think I can get even better flash reduction as there was a slight design error that may be causing some of the minimal flash I do get. It is very hard to eliminate all flash with standard flash hider type muzzle devices.

If you can do that I will take my hat off to you. What you are trying to do is very difficult as the issues you are working with tend to oppose one another.

Luckily I slept like crap after my midnight shift last night so I was awake when the courier guy arrived.:) It's been a long time coming. I got this one from Moreguns Supply.

Nice box. Includes everything pictured.

Cleaning kit. Like the other CSA carbine I shot, the gas pick has no elevation tool.

Left and right sides.

As shown, the front sight is drifted way to the left. The sight doesn't appear canted, so hopefully it's just poor assembly QC and not zeroed there.

Folded.

North Eastern Arms upper handguard fit right on, nice and snug.

Scope rail. It's solid steel.

Gas block area. It came with the Czech military brake.

A few different muzzle options:

Just the thread protector that comes with. Quite a bit shorter.

Side-by-side comparison to my 14.5" AR. AR stock one click out.

Unlike the CSA "torture test" carbine I shot, the bolt is not painted underneath, nor does it have the extractor groove milled in near the tab. Maybe those are supposed to be on the 5.56mm guns?

IMG_1434Medium.jpg

Scope rail removed.

IMG_1435Medium.jpg

I tried a Dlask extend mag release. It wouldn't work. Note the different profiles on the top of the releases.

Left CSA, center Dlask, right from CZ858.

All ready for the range. Scope rail removed, NEA ambi selector, brake and handguard rail, and Neit Arms ambi mag release installed. A Neit bolt release will make it perfect.

Merry Christmas indeed!

Stevo, did you try the NEA lower on your carbine? I have a set that came off of my CZ and the lower will not fit the VZ carbine, the upper fits fine but tab on the lower (where it goes into the receiver and is held in by the roll pin) will not fit into the receiver (I'm assuming that it's because of the thicker receiver walls) I can't measure the receiver walls and compare them to the CZ because I sold the CZ in order to buy the VZ :)

I'm just interested to see if anyone else was able to use the NEA lower on their carbines, my handguard may have been one of the original ones and things may have changed on newer models.

OK, so I feel like a bit of an idiot this morning, when I first tried installing the NEA lower, I removed the retaining pin just enough to remove the factory lower handguard (instead of removing the pin completely) and then tried installing the NEA lower and as it turns out the NEA lower has more of a retaining lip on the tab than the factory one does. So no matter how much you beat on it and call it silly names it's not going to seat in place with a pin in the way.

It fits fine now, so I apologize if I've mislead anyone into thinking that the NEA lower may not fit in the new CSA VZ-58 carbines, sorry about that. The NEA foregrip set is a great piece of kit.

Hey Stevo, what distance are you going to zero your rifle for?

I zero'd at 25 yards which puts it .85inches high at 100 and 6.5 inches low at 200 yards.

It's from the chart. I posted it in my original thread when I got my rifle. I've tried this zero at the 125yard and 200 gongs and it worked quite well. At 300 yards the chart put drop at over 26 inches...:D

Is that .85" high at 100 from a chart or from shooting it? I'll probably put a 50m zero on mine.

I normally use a 50m zero with my non-res 858s. It's a bit high at 100m but back on at 200m. I'm sure this carbine won't shoot that flat due to the reduced velocity.

stevo, you seem to own all the aftermarket and factory muzzle brakes, what one would you say is the most effective for gun and gun type shooting???

I don't have any of the Dlask brakes or comps. Of the muzzle devices I own only the Czech military and NEA Heavy Brake are primarily brakes. I like the NEA brake better out of the two.
