Mini 14 Target Model

Here is a video on Youtube that is a must see if you are thinking about buying one of these rifles.

Nice video, but hey, you'd expect good shooting when your rifle is firmly seated as so.

The Mini in that video, has absolutely nowhere to move at all before he fires. It's all lines up everything not lifted nothing from what I can see.....

How does this rifle shoot from a standing position? As opposed to well, pretty much set in concrete, figuratively speaking that is?

Not to say I'm not blown away, god damn I want one of these even more now.

how else is someone supposed to set up a rifle with a new scope? the dude is just using a front and rear rest...
from a standing position it's how you shoot not how the rifle shoots...
compared to the old mini (i made that mistake a couple of times :( ...)
using that same setup restwise, you would be lucky to get 5 shots in 6 inches...

funny how 200 yards is "way out there" for the though...

"WOW" $925.00 I'm only paying $849.00 for mine I should be able to afford a couple of extra mag's now... :D

Grove how do you sight in a rifle?

Even with the rifle set up as perfectly as I can get it into a rest if the rifle isn't accurate it still doesn't group well.

When I shoot from a bench the rifle is set up as locked into position that I can get it and only after I have it sighted in do I start blasting away from different positions...

edit to add;

Donny you beat me to it by only seconds... :D

Nice job Camp Cook. Where did you get yours from?
How do you like it? I've been looking at one of these from a distance for a while now. Maybe this summer.

I pick it up today so can't say how it shoots yet I do like the balance of it though which is a little heavier than I wanted.

It was the only one available in the area so I don't know if anymore are around for that price.

Go back a few posts and you will see where I am buying it.

Cam,

That's a GREAT deal! ;)

Jeff.

Thanks Camp Cook.
Let us know how it shoots.

I'm a ways off from getting one. Although I was thinking maybe one with the hogue stock near the end of the summer.
Ardent seems to like his, and I have to admit overall it is a very good deal, for a non restricted decent accuracy semi auto .223.

I just got it home and mounted a Leupold VX3 4.5X - 14X BC reticle scope I'll srub it down and oil it up and get to the gun club to give it a work out.

I ended up paying $100.00 in taxes...

Taxes one of the very few crappy things about living in BC... :(

Great to hear I'm going tomorrow too, I'll take some pic's of targets as well.

One issue I have to deal with before I go is my 60gr loads are to long for the mag I'll have to seat them deeper in order to get them to fit.

I contacted Hubsports to get a pricing on one (Target/Hogue) as I find the price Camp Cook got was attracting, but my being in Afghanistan and having poor phone lines screwed the call and I'm not sure they'll get the info I asked so I may go with P&D for 925$.

I'll wait till tomorrow see where I get it from.

Here are some pictures from todays first try with my new Mini 14 Target I was playing with the stabalizer the entire time and used 2 different loads.

@ 100 yards groups would change size and point of impact fairly quickly with just a few turns of the weight.

The barrel heated up a bit quicker than I expected then I remembered that only the front 1/2 of the barrel is the larger diameter barrel the rest is only margonally larger that a stock barrel.

I shot some 200 yard groups and as of now I will only say that they were definately minute of coyote but I need to spend more time tuning the stabalizer before I spend any more time shooting at that distance.

Overall I was very please with the rifle it functioned perfectly everytime and I shot about 100 rounds all together.

edit to add: the weather was all over the place today raining/windy/calm/sunny/cloudy it definately didn't help me out... :(

The target scale is 1"...

50 yard groups...

100 yard groups...

There are 2 groups in the far left target the 5 holes to the right of that target where 1 group and the other 3 on the left another.

Camp Cook,
What ammo were you using? 1/9 twist on that barrel?

Looks like it has some promise. Just needs ammo and harmonic dampener tweaked a bit. Definately some potential there.

How's the trigger? Trigger job needed or decent?

Nice purchase.

I was using my reloads of 23.5grs H322 with both 50gr Sierra Blitz and 60gr Varminter HP's.

I had these loads already loaded for my Rem 700P I had to seat the 60gr bullets deeper to fit the mag before I headed out. Remember these are not match loads just dumped quickly from my powder measure and a bullet seated.

I have read that this gun is a 1-9" twist.

Trigger definately needs some work it is a long heavy trigger pull better than I expected but definately not condusive to accurate shooting at least for an old guy like me.

Do you guys know of anyone in western Canada that works on these triggers?

Sounds good Camp Cook.
I have one rifle that I'm buying first :D. Then I'll be considering the mini 14.

Ardent, looking forward to seeing those targets.
