Modern Varmint Rifle Updated Oct 14 2015

I see that the MH works best with match ammo and not with all ammo as per your website. Can the same be said for the MV, or will it be able to work with surplus .556/.223 for plinking?

Both, like ALL AR style rifles do not feed well with lead soft point (typical hunting) ammo. FMJs JHPs or polymer tipped bullets will feed through the barrel extension without issue.
Both rifles will probably run crap ammo that has those types of bullets , but with crap ammo you usually encounter much dirtier powder which will build up significantly faster than what ammo loaded with cleaner burning powder will. Like ALL AR style rifles these "crap where they eat" so to speak and the dirtier the ammo the more you will have to clean and typically the bigger the groups get.
Most surplus ammo is designed for use in guns or situations where cyclic rate makes up for the lack of accuracy.
As long as those who choose to run the cheapest crap ammo available also understand that accuracy and reliability is sacrificed by saving money on ammo and that with the chances of some of the offshore surplus ammo possibly causing damage to ANY rifle being higher, they can run it at their own risk. We recommend using known brand decent quality ammo so as to minimize the chances of FTF, poor accuracy and possible damage to the rifle.

Many performance cars today recommend running 91 octane gas and many specify a specific brand to get the performance the car is capable of.
Will the car still run on the potentially contaminated high methanol content low octane gas sold at the stations that are non affiliated with any known fuel company but sells their fuel for 3 to 5 cents per liter less? Yes but how well? And how long will the fuel system work well with all the build up of crud left from the cheaper gas?

What I found with my modern hunter is great results with surplus ammunition, except for the weak trigger spring not firing hard primers. If you could put in a trigger with a stronger primer strike that would be a big plus. And also if you could find a stronger trigger for my modern hunter it would eliminate all the light primer hits occurring

Rick posted a while back that a gun made in 2015 was not designed to fired ammunition made in 1975. Or 85, or whenever. His point is that surplus ammo doesn't have the tight tolerances that he runs for this gun. Edit. I think the spring works fine on my MH.

I am not sure that is quite right. Let me put it this way, we are employing match type chambers cut in match barrels. Our tolerances are much tighter than "battle" rifles to attain the accuracy and reliability when fed decent ammo.
Match triggers have ALOT less chance of reliably lighting up the hard cup primers used in ammo designed for machine guns or battle rifles. We felt that having a standard mil spec type trigger that had a break weight of 7 or more pounds was not in the best interest of accuracy.
Sloppy chambers that will allow any ammo to fit is NOT what gives accuracy or does it make reloaders happy.

As a result of the overall tighter tolerances, lighter trigger pull and the fact that these rifles were never intended as "spray and pray" guns, we do not recommend the use of surplus ammo.

Rick when we were talking at the chilliwack gun show you said the first 100 pre orders of the modern hunter would get first in line to order the modern varmint er, with the same serial number, is that still the case?

We have a list of those who took a leap of faith and put down money on the first run of MH rifles. We are composing a mass email to go to those people. These were the only rifles that had the option of a custom serial number. These people who believed in us enough to help get the MH into production will have the opportunity to purchase a MV rifle with the same serial number as their MH has to make them a set. Historically a set of firearms with the same serial number has more value than mis-matched ones.
ONLY the original purchaser of the custom serial numbered MH rifles will have this opportunity. They do not necessarily have to be first in line, this offer is open ended to the original run owners. With these economic times some may not be in a position to move on the new rifle especially after recently purchasing a MH.
We know some of the original rifles have been re-sold and the offer of the custom serial numbered matching rifle is NOT open to the second or subsequent owners, only the original purchaser may exercise this opportunity.

To be clear we are NOT offering custom serial numbers to anyone that we do not have a record of purchase for the first run of Modern Hunter rifles, and the last 6 alpha numeric digits of the serial number will be the same as what was engraved on the Modern Hunter.

Sounds good Rick if you want a deposit up front let us know , I'll be waiting for the email

I have a MH and a Second upper on order and next month after I pay off my s404 unimog I would like to put money down for MV I need to fill the Second gun rack in the cab of the s404 Swiss troop carrier Nothing worse than an empty gun rack Exept trying to find XCR-m mag jk

One of the things we are working on is a simplified on-line ordering program for both the Hunter and Varmint.

That would be outstanding I for one and I am sure many others would be willing to put a deposit down now if the option was available. Was looking at the Modern Hunter options yet again on the website today and pretty much have planned out what I would want the Modern Varmiter to have.

In all honesty the build sheet for the MH was a quick fix to us being inundated with orders. Personally I was not fond of the 1st rendition, but it was better than nothing for paperwork to work from. It got the job done. We like to learn from our experiences and mistakes, so have spent some time working on a new format for build sheets that are hopefully much more user friendly.

Also from what we learned with the MH, until we actually have the FRT paperwork to produce we will not be offering the Varmints for sale. The trashing and drama that a couple of CGN members gave us in this regard was enough to make us see that until we have tangible proof, the masses will have to wait in order to place an order.:HR: A shame that a couple of clowns can screw things up for all, we have verbal approval from the SFSS/RCMP already.:d

Definitely interested in one of these rifles, I'm hoping I can get in on the first run but I will wait if need be. I'm ready to make a deposit whenever and would love to come pick it up in person upon completion, I'd like to see what else you guys have to offer.

Thanks for taking on this project!

Just wondering is there any chance that I can add a mid length gas system and colt LE 901 gas block on it ? Will it be possible to service a barrel at gunsmith level or it is a factory level ?
Ps. Still got a 10 years old flash hider from you and still works great.
Thank you

No chance for mid length as barrels will all be 18.6" long. We have no access to Colt parts and frankly I don't see any reason to expand on the foreign parts content of a Canadian made rifle.
Modification made by other parties will void the warranty. Many of the parts are proprietary to ATRS so can not be obtained from other sources.

Is there a Fortis SWITCH 15" handguard for 556?
I see 308 models listed on their website, but 556 seems to max out at 14".
Just wondering since I made my order with a 15"

Fortis does NOT make a 15" for the AR15 platform, only the AR10 which is not compatible due to size.
What is shown on our website for offered hand guards is all there is at this point in time. We will add to the menu as we establish further options.

To clarify, I ordered mine as well with the Fortis 15" as that WAS an option at the time (november 26). I see that option has now been removed from the Varmint Drop-down menu. I assume ATRS will default to the 14" for those of us who ordered the 15. On the plus side, the 14" is 380.00 so I assume we get a credit of 45$ ?
Thanks Rick.

Your assumptions are spot on. It was 1 of a few things we missed and have corrected with the new website pages.
The IT guys have done a great job, but it is hard to cover everything at 1 time. We are still refining the order forms so it is always a good idea to check our website occasionally just to stay on top of any possible changes.
